- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I have always been passionate about dogs and as a child I had a huge collection of dog breed books, dog health books and dog training books. I lived and breathed dogs and was determined to work with dogs when I grew up. When I was young, I rescued a Siberian Husky, Phantom, who was a runner. He could not be trusted off-leash but was an athletic dog who wanted to run, so I jumped right into training with him. I also rescued a German Shepherd, Einstein, and he was offensively aggressive with people and dogs. Einstein also had a great need for exercise so getting him off-leash trained was a goal I had. Einstein turned out to be my main demonstration dog when I began as a professional trainer. I have also worked in Veterinary Medicine in an Emergency hospital, however it just wasnt the right fit for me. Though I enjoyed the element of helping families in crisis with their dogs health, I much prefer to be involved on an educational and training level. I absolutely love going to folks homes to see what is actually going on with their dog. In most cases, I usually find dog owners that are very frustrated with their dogs behavior and have no idea that there is an easy and smart dog training solution that WILL work! My entire life has been dedicated to building my knowledge of dog training and dog health care. I have attended numerous dog training schools and many dog seminars over the course of my 17 year career and I continue to educate myself. In addition to working as a dog trainer, I have found time to dedicate to numerous dog sports. I have competed in many different sports at the highest level. Through this experience, and having so much fun along the way, I have a much better grasp on how to match pet dogs up with a dog sport that will be a good fit for them and their owner. From introducing the dog to a new sport, to proper conditioning, nutrition and training, it is such a great experience. - Lianne Shinton
- What types of customers have you worked with?
Most of the calls we get are for dogs that have behavioral issues. Generally, once we evaluate the dog, we realize, it does not truly have behavioral issues, but rather, just needs some structure. Once we provide the structure, the issues usually vanish. This is usually the case with issues like aggression, separation anxiety, hyperactivity, digging, running away, barking, fence fighting, leash pulling, housebreaking, separation anxiety and more! For those cases where dogs truly have behavioral issues with their dogs, we have great success in changing behavior for the better so the dog and family is happy and can move forward with years of a better relationship.
