The One-to-One Tutoring Service has been providing in-home private, professional tutoring in the San Francisco Bay area since 1979 for most academic subjects.

On average, our tutors have been working for us for more than 7 years, so you know you are getting experienced tutors when you use our service. All of our tutors have at least a bachelor's degree, and about half have graduate degrees.

We cover most academic subjects, including math (arithmetic, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, precalculus, and calculus), English (reading, writing, grammar, spelling, punctuation, literature, and ESL), languages (Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Hebrew, and Romanian), sciences (chemistry, physics, biology, geology, environmental science, and oceanography), social sciences (economics, business administration, and history), computer science, statistics, test preparation (SAT I, ACT, SAT II subjects tests (chemistry, physics, biology, math, American history, languages, and literature), GRE, and TOEFL), college entrance counseling, including college essays, and special education specialists.

We have tutors for all grade levels, from elementary grades to high school, as well as college level courses. Call us to find out who we have available in your area.

The director of our service, Tim Gasser, a highly experienced educator who has been in the tutoring business for more than 30 years, interviews all tutors and checks their references before putting them on our roster of tutors. All of our active tutors are listed on our website. Check out their qualifications and call to find out more about a tutor you are interested in.

Our family has worked with One-to-One Tutoring for over three years in providing tutoring for my high-school daughter in mathematics, and for a short period, in chemistry. We have worked with the same math tutor which has proven to be an excellent relationship that has served my child well. The administration services have also been excellent, with prompt and accurate billing. If our tutor needs to be away for vacations or other reasons, we are always offered a substitute so that coverage is not missed. I appreciate the flexibility, accessibility and high caliber of professional people involved in this agency.

We have been working with a math tutor for 5 years (both our daughters) that we found through One-to-One Tutoring. She is fantastic - reliable, flexible and very smart (an MIT grad). Tim Gasser is always extremely responsive to any inquiries and once a match is made, allows us work directly with the tutor which makes scheduling very easy.

We have used One to One tutoring. The tutors were educated and helpful in assisting my son to the next level of knowledge for his classes. We used them for 2 subjects and always pleased with the results.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Be as specific as you can about what you are looking for in a tutor. Give the subject, the grade level, any special circumstances about the student, possible times the student is available, and any other preferences regarding the tutor. Being specific makes it easier for the director to match your student up with a tutor who is a good match for him or her.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. How long has the service been in business? Does the service have tutors who have worked in the subject or grade levels you are interested in previously?

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. What are the qualifications of the tutor with regard to years of experience with the subject, degrees earned, willingness to travel to the student, availability, and so on?

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. What sort of schedule of lessons are you looking for? What is your acceptable price range? Are you willing to pay more to get a more experienced tutor? Do you need to a tutor to come to your home, or would it be better to meet at a library or other public place, or are you willing to go to the tutor's home?

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Our service has tutors who stick with us because they enjoy working for our service. On average our tutors have been working for our service for more than 7 years. Some have been with us since the 1980's. In general they are highly experienced in their fields. About half of them have graduate degrees.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. That we are helping students achieve their academic goals by meeting their individual needs. Each student is unique, and we want to match them up with a tutor who will help them reach their goals.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. I tutored a student in reading way back in 1969-70 school year when I was a VISTA Volunteer. He was repeating the sixth grade and was reading at the second grade level when we started. He made great progress that year, and it made me realize how tutoring could really make a difference in a student's life. I am still in contact with that student today.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. Right now I am working with a community college student tutoring him in algebra. When I started with him last semester, he was failing his course. He pulled his grade up to a C. So far this semester his progress has been remarkable, and I believe he has the potential to get an A in the second semester course he is taking now.

Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.

A. We charge by the hour for lessons. Generally, the minimum lesson is for one hour. If a lesson goes longer than one hour, we charge to the closest quarter hour after the first hour. If the tutor meets the student at his home or office, we charge round trip mileage at the current rate set for business mileage by the IRS. That rate is currently $.555 per mile. There is a one-time only $20 registration fee when a client registers with our service. We bill clients monthly, and the client may pay by check or credit card.
