  • i had a great December/holiday series of events. I did three gigs in one weekend, and i also did a poster for a jewelry design company that showed all the employees as superheroes. Thanks go to Al Gordon for that project referral and for the inking as well! – Jan 03, 2011 at 3:34 pm

  • Have had a good month; I've had five caricature gigs in October, and another one coming up this weekend. Still looking to increase business though. – Nov 01, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. The jobs I do most often are parties for company picnics/parties and I've also gotten to work at birthday parties, weddings, conventions, and in many types of venues from hotel ballrooms to backyards to yachts!

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. My particular skill is to get a good, humorous likeness without too much exaggeration. If you want an original piece of art, I would suggest that you think about how much you'd like to spend and what you're looking for. The bigger the drawing, the more I charge, and providing a color illustration is always going to cost more than black and white art.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. What is your hourly rate? Do you ever charge by the drawing instead of hourly? How many drawings do you do in an hour? What kind of events do you work at?

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I provide a style of drawing that is not necessarily an over-the-top exaggeration but rather a cartoon portrait that can capture a likeness and a humorous approach to the subject without being insulting or demeaning. I usually win over the women subjects by taking off the years and the pounds (without being asked)!

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. I had just drawn a woman's picture and she expressed her thanks by saying "Thanks for being an optimist". I wasn't quite sure what she meant, and she said "I meant thanks for seeing the best in me". At the same event a man I was drawing said "I hate the way I look in photos and drawings." After he saw my drawing of him, he said "Wow, I really like this!", so I felt like I was really on point that night; I attempt to draw every subject with the person's reaction in mind.

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. My most recent project was a series of drawings for a wedding; the couple asked me to draw about 75 small pictures of their guests before the event from photos posted on the internet to be used as place holders at their wedding reception dinner. The drawings were about 4 inches x 5 inches, black & white, and it took about a week to do.
