Introduction: I recently had a client remark about my emotional intelligence, which I think may be a hidden strength of mine. You can see my software skills in my work, it's observable, but what you may not know is that I am skilled at understanding people and what they are trying to communicate, and have the wisdom and work ethic to see things that need to get done and simply doing them. I think it's this that sets me apart from others in my field. I love the constant challenge of taking on a new client working on a new project. I often get to bring a fresh perspective to a problem that a client is grappling with -- like, how do I get customers to my website, or am I communicating the right message with my logo -- and can offer solutions that make a difference.

I needed to replace a 15-year-long freelancer who knew everything about the job and had moved on to nursing on an annual visitor's guide to the Napa Valley. Kate was one of 4 finalists for the job found through craigslist, and did I make the right decision in choosing her for the job. Much of the job was listings and information and Kate kept track of it all, pointed out possible problems, created new lists based on the styles of old ones, and took initiative when needed. At the end of 6 weeks she delivered approved files to me for inclusion in the rest of the publication that were near final. I cannot imagine that this job could have gone any easier. My smartest professional decision of the year.

Don't go by samples alone -- you need to be able to easily communicate with your designer. Being understood and on the same page can be the difference between a fast job that achieves exactly what you want, vs. an endless frustrating cycle that takes longer and costs more than you wanted to spend.
