Introduction: I don't like to compare myself with other teachers. I would rather like to stress that my main interest as a teacher is revealing to a student the joy that comes from playing saxophone and the ways in which she or he can learn from my guidance how to teach themselves and thus continue to improve throughout their lives. Helping others discover the wonders of music and the great sense of well being that comes from playing music well.

Details: 26 - 44 years old • No formal training • No, the student cannot read music • Jazz • Blues • What the teacher recommends • Yes, the student has an instrument • 60 minutes • At the pro’s location • My home, venue, etc.

I am a professional musician and music teacher, and when I decided to learn a little saxophone for a project I went on Thumbtack and quickly found Zan. He's a great teacher: he could see exactly what knowledge I would need to have in order to really get started on the instrument, and he conveyed it to me in a direct and warm way, getting me well set up for success with the sax. In addition he is very friendly and fun to work with. As a colleague, I can tell that he must be a great teacher with people of all skill levels and ages. I am looking forward to working with him more as I need further lessons!

I am an absolute beginner. In these initial classes, Zan is helping me step by step to play the sax. I appreciate his patience. I have a long way to go.

I have taken saxophone lesson from Zan since last April of 2014. It was my first lesson related to music and I never played Saxophone in my life. Zan is not only a good saxophonist or musician but also the best teacher I've ever met. He taught me not only how to play and what to play but also I learned why I play and how to enjoy playing. My younger daughter,Hazel married last October,2014. When I told Zan that, he suggested me to play a saxophone during the reception. I said 'What?, No thanks' because I was not even able to make a sound properly using the horn. I think it was May or June and I was taking one hour lesson weekly. But he kept persuading me that it might be the best gift to them and picked one song called "Hawaiian Wedding Song" And guess what, that was my first song played in public, at my daughter's wedding reception. My daughter and her husband Paul were so happy and touched that they have been to Maui for their first anniversary 3 weeks ago. I could not think about to play a song in front of many people in 6 months when I first met Zan. But he made me do it. Once again he is a good teacher, good motivator and good friend to me. It's been a year and half now. I am still learning but I enjoy playing. And I am glad that I chose the saxophone as one of my retirement plans and I am very lucky to meet Zan as my saxophone teacher.

Zan has been teaching my middle school son how to play the alto saxophone for about a year and a half. My son has quickly learned from Zan how to read well and play with style and nuance. But that's just the half of it. In truth, my son is learning so much more from Zan. Zan doesn't just teach (and Zan's knowledge of music is truly vast); he truly cares about my son's interests and aptitude, and strives to engage with him on his level and in a way that inspires him to achieve his best musically, and to feel good about his playing and progress. Zan also inspires my son know and appreciate the beauty of music, so valuable for any music student. My science-minded son has never asked to not go to a music lesson (Zan is always upbeat and positive), or to not have to practice, though I suspect this would likely be the case with another teacher. This is because Zan has helped my son learn to appreciate both the effort that music demands and the reward it provides. What more could one expect to learn?
