Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. We typically stay within the commercial and residential fields, but have also done work in the medical field as well as government contracting. We used to do more residential work, but lately that has flipped and the majority of our work is on the commercial side of the equation.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Get more than one bid and make sure those bids are all based on the same scope of work and that they will provide you with the same quality and materials when all is said and done. One guy might be less expensive, but will you get what you pay for? Value is defined as the quality you get for the money you spend.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. How involved is the owner with the day to day operations? What is the mark-up on materials? Will the contractor handle ALL phases of my project? These are good questions to ask your next contractor.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. Great question! In a perfect world, buyers would have some sort of plan from which to work as well as a clear scope of the work to be done. This isn't always possible since most times the clients are looking for help with these questions. I think architects or even simply draftsmen are overlooked as the true "first step" in any building project because all great projects start with a great plan.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Howard Construction truly cares about the quality of their work as well as the satisfaction of their customers. We pride ourselves on integrity an embrace the idea that it is what you do when no one is watching that matters in the end.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. Setting ourselves apart in our industry and seeing the satisfaction on our customers' faces when we go the extra mile really makes what we do something special. The expectation of contractors seems to be somewhat low, so we strive to raise that bar and gain tremendous sastisfaction when we succed at that.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. How much will this cost me??? :o) It is hard to answer that question at the initial consultation, but I tell all clients the same thing. Have a clear scope of work for what it is that you intend to accomplish and then share that with at least three contractors so that you may receive a true apples-to-apples cost estimate.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. How many times a night your project goes through my mind. We are a small business and have built our reputation not on the scope of projects that we have completed, but by the level of service that we are known to provide.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. My father was a shop teacher and gave me a wooden toolbox with all of the carpentry tools at a very young age. I was hooked right away and at 44 years of age, that is all I have ever done or wanted to do.

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. We just completed the renovation of a 250 unit apartment complex. It took 60 days from start to finish, involved over a dozen sub-contractors plus various project managers as the client was from out of state. Communication as always was the key to the success of this job and we were happy to deliver a completed project on time and on budget.
