Introduction: If you are struggling to make progress at the piano, whether you are complete beginner or took lessons in the past, I have many years of experience helping people just like you to find the joy again in playing, and to move forward. My lessons are fun because I care about what I do, and because I live it: music is not only my career, it's my passion! My piano studio has been a finalist in the Sacramento A-List Contest for BEST MUSIC INSTRUCTION for three years running (2016, 2017, 2018) I enjoy helping students make progress. I enjoy seeing the stumbling blocks disappear as students make their way through their music. I enjoy helping students experience firsts, whether that's playing their first song or writing their first song, or playing for an audience or playing with other musicians. I love helping people participate more joyfully and skillfully in music making.

I've been working on learning to play the piano with Chris' help for just over a year. I studied piano for a year or so about 30 years ago and, like many other former players, have wanted to get back to it for quite a long time. Chris is a very good teacher and mentor/coach for me. He has a thorough knowledge of music theory which he shares as I work on piano pieces. Discussing how a piece works (the chords chosen by to composer) makes the learning experience more interesting and provides a more complete understanding of music and how it is made. Working together on improvisation from time to time provides additional appreciation of how music is created. Chris provides suggestions covering how to make my time spent practicing as effective as possible and is a constant source of motivation and encouragement. Learning this new skill is not always easy and progress can occasionally seem slower than I feel it should be. Chris provides encouragement and coaching which are sometimes needed to maintain motivation.

This is my first private piano lesson experience and it has been really good. I have taken piano lessons in a class setting and this one-on-one opportunity allows me to move at my own pace and allows me to start where at my skill level. Also, Chris has taken a less traditional approach with my lessons and focuses on the knowledge I seek when it comes to piano. He has cleverly tailored lessons to fit my needs. That has made all of the difference. I have made much progress towards my piano playing and personal musical goals since working with him. More so than in my past training and I am looking forward to see what more progress he can evoke from me.

Chris had a big challenge with me as a student. My total lack of musical training or talent along with my advanced age (80) posed a major challenge. He was very patient and made modifications to the program. He was great!

I would give Chris Goslow my highest recommendation for someone looking for a piano teacher. He has a passion for teaching and I love how he explains the rationale behind his methods. He is interested in what you might want to gain from learning piano and will tailor a lesson plan to accomplish your goal. He offers a variety of formats - one on one as well as group teaching. He enjoys a wide range of musical genres and has a firm grasp of musical theory, which I love. I had to interrupt my lessons temporarily but I look forward to resuming them with Chris when my schedule allows.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I have different programs at different tuition rates. I have a weekly group program, weekly private students, and occasional students. So tuition will depend on which of these options makes the most sense for you. Normally, I prefer to meet the student so we can discuss these things in person. Therefore, I offer a FREE, no-obligation trial lesson.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Usually, we will meet for the trial lesson, which could last 45-60 minutes (I like to give a lot of time to assess where the student is, and how I can best help them). From there, I make a recommendation on what I think I can best offer, then they decide from there what they want to do.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
--12+ years of piano teaching experience --B.A with an emphasis in Music from UC Berkeley --3 years of piano lessons at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Preparatory department
