Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. When considering a piano teacher, interview three and consider these main points:

1. Length of experience and credentials
2. An abundance of rapport with children and parents
3. An infectious enthusiasm for teaching piano and music
4. Ideally: Ability to demonstrate magnificently and to play exceptionally well. (Instrumental training!)

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Here is an excerpt from www.misterevan.com...my website:

Frustration does not equal Joy, Results and Piano Success!

90% of piano dropouts are caused by inexperienced teachers that are not tuned to the warning signs of frustration and the need to make adjustments at the lesson. When you hear someone say about piano lessons.."I wish I had continued"...they are a product of a teacher who needed to know much more about paving the road for their piano student. A teacher trained in performance never hurts...A teacher who plays beautifully will add inspiration to your child's lessons. You want to have meaning and inspiration in your lessons... Is your student reaching for the sound-beautiful?
On the other hand, if your student is one of the 10--15 % that has a high frustration threshold, be sure that your teacher is paving the road with pieces that they can be successful in. Little by little, building success with positive happy feedback, they will go just as far and learn confidence, persistence and self esteem in their accomplishments!

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Do not doubt me on this...it takes a professional who is excellent at a variety of teaching and music skills plus long experience and training to be a successful piano teacher. (Success meaning results). Success in piano teaching means that you garner and capture the interest of 100% of the children who you teach, that you are universally liked and appreciated, and that you maintain curiosity and interest in the progress of each and every student and their music!

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. Though I truly like teaching all levels, I feel it is very very important for beginning students to start on the right track.....Of course I like the opposite end of the spectrum..making a DVD together for a University Audition with an advanced student. They are both equally important.
Helping students love piano and voice, from the beginning is my specialty. Enthusiastically introducing the basics is wonderful. I like seeing my students grow and be self motivated and challenge themselves!

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. This subject is alot more involved than most people imagine. I urge interviewing at least a few teachers before making up your mind and to visit www.misterevan.com,
Particularly this page:

http://www.misterevan.com/id40.html

This page has some very helpful hints for parents about piano lessons!

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. Coaching one of my students to apply to Stanford University of California. His requirement was to perform an audition for the music department there on DVD. We selected to do the Jazz audition and included an improvisatory section in one of the songs. This required him to stretch his abilities so we got a lot done within the deadline for the audition.

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. Do you have a Music Program That is for College Entry/ Audition?

Yes. I am a member of the Music Teachers Association and teach all 11 levels of the Certificate of Merit program. The Certificate of Merit is an opportunity for all ages to become proficient in music skills, performance and theory.
Certificate of Merit levels are bite size pieces of College Level Music Courses. College Entrance Boards look very very favorably on enrollment in this extra-curricular program from the Music Teachers Association of California.
I love working with my students on all aspects of preparation for College including CM Coursework, Classical, Jazz, and Improv Styles, Video/DVD/CD production and of course Recommendation.
