Introduction: Joey Earnest is a musician and educator from Southern California, who specializes in piano, saxophone, composition, and production. In addition to teaching private music lessons, he teaches several rock and jazz history courses with the San Diego Community College District. He received a BM in Jazz Studies: Saxophone Performance from UC Irvine, an MM in Composition from San Diego State University, and an MA in Education from National University. Joey also produces and composes electro-acoustic music. Joey can be heard performing in and around San Diego with his band, The Munks. Joey also holds “virtual recitals” for his students every 3 months. All students are expected to prepare a few songs to perform and record for the recital video that gets sent to the students and their families. These recitals create incentive for students to practice, and provide parents a concrete solution for tracking their child’s progress. Online music lessons are an excellent option for busy families and students with irregular schedules.

Joey has been teaching piano to my 9 year old son for almost a year now. We are very happy with the relationship our son and Joey have, and with our son’s progress. My husband and I both studied music in college, and we’ve both been music teachers at various points in our careers. We know a solid teacher when we see one. Joey somehow manages to set high expectations for our son while remaining laid back and fun. He lets our son explore different types of music as our son’s interest changes. We find that flexibility refreshing and necessary to keep young kids interested. Out of all his activities, our son loves piano the most, and a lot of that has to do with the quality of teaching he receives from Joey. Speaking of flexibility, Joey has adapted his teaching seamlessly to teaching via zoom, and even put together a lovely virtual recital for all the kids in his studio during the covid-19 social distancing situation. We heard about Joey from friends, and continue to recommend him to others.

Excellent musician and teacher. I've known Joey for almost 10 years now. I am also a music teacher and I am always learning new things from him. He has taught at the university level all the way down to the elementary level. Regardless of age or experience, Joey's helpfulness and patience knows no bounds. I highly recommend Joey as his knowledge of music and teaching far exceeds what is typical of a music teacher.

He really tries to focus on the student's progress and teaches each student fundamental theory in order for them to understand the music and its purpose.

Joey's an excellent teacher-he helped me get excellent scores on my solo piece when I performed it. Definitely would consider for work on a solo piece for saxophone.

Joey has been my son's piano teacher for the past 2 1/2 years. I Highly recommend him!! My son has made more progress with him than I ever dreamed possible. Joey listened to my desire to utilize a non-traditional teaching approach and he not only understood what I was looking for, he embraced it. Now, my son has a pretty extensive repertoire of very entertaining songs he can play at a moment's notice and it's a joy to listen to him practice and bring music into our home. He's learning stuff now that I thought he wouldn't be able to touch for years to come. Joey is the Man!!
