Question and answer
Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. In your search for a qualified and competent video producer, look at the demo reels on their site, and ask these questions: how long have you been in business? What sort of equipment do you have? What are your qualifications? References? Is this a kid who just graduated from film school with a Canon 7D or a company with over 30 years of experience and top-of-the-line equipment. Do your homework by asking the right questions.
Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
A. I would want to know how qualified the vendor is. There are a lot of kids fresh out of school who claim to be video producers. Do they know how to properly light an interview subject? Or do they rush in with a camera and no tripod, and expect natural lighting to be okay? Do they depend on their Canon 7D for correct depth of field? Do they sit the interview subject directly in front of a wall? Do they think about what's in the background? How experienced are they, really?
Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?
A. Find out about what sort of experience the professional has. Learn about their references and past projects. Actually make a call to the references they provide and see how happy their clients are with the work they did. Beware of wedding shooters and kids fresh out of school who are claiming to be professional corporate and broadcast producers. Maybe their rates are great, but if you have to re-do your shoot because the sound was echoey, and the lighting was bad, that's a harsh way to learn how to hire the right company in the first place - the one with lots of experience and know-how.
