Introduction: My strong suit as a graphic designer is customer service. I believe that many designers, while extremely talented, are not the best at giving the client a product based on their needs. I ask a bunch of questions, I try to get to know the client and their business and get to the core of their needs. Then I come up with a strategy based on that data. Ultimately it's all about the client. I love that it's both creative and practical. I get to pick out photos, fonts, layouts and colors but I also create tangible things that clients can utilize to get more business.

Ryan was phenomenal to work with. His talent exceeded all of my expectations. I brought him in to work on a client's website redesign. He was able to create the look and feel that my client wanted, which made my client extremely happy (and thus, made me extremely happy). Ryan listened to my client's wishes for her website, took the time to show several samples he thought would be a good fit, and worked endlessly to make sure the final product was exactly what my client wanted. Plus, he is a very kind-hearted soul who is very easy to work with. I would absolutely work with Ryan again and always have him in mind to bring in if any other clients are looking for website redesign.

Ryan did a great job with our conference website. We had some fairly clear ideas about what we wanted, and there was no designer ego that stood between us and that, but his skills did make things even better than what we'd envisioned. I'm working with him now to update that site and to work on a personal brand website and he's prompt, upfront about pricing, and willing to discuss creative ideas just like last time. We'll use Ryan over and over.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I can charge hourly or per project, depending on the project and how many details I'm able to get about it.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I like to sit down and chat with them and get to know their business. For me, I can't do a good job on a design project if I don't know the customer and their business. Then I try to dig deep and find out what their needs are and how I can help them. If it's not a good match, I let them know that. If so, it's time to dig in!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Master's degree in Publications Design from the University of Baltimore, where I worked in the graphics lab as a Graduate Assistant. I then began working for The Atlantic in 2004, and have been doing graphic design work ever since.
