Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
A. Unfortunately there are a lot of flakes in this business. Over half my clients are projects that were half finished (or less) and the developer simply disappeared or over committed. While some developers and instruction services charge less they take longer and do poor quality work. Cost is determined by Rate time Hours so my advice, even if you don't go with FortySix Web is to avoid the low cost providers.
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. What makes FortySix Web special is our dedication to the Joomla Platform and our over 30 years experience in the IT Industry. We take the extra time to sit down with our clients and understand their unique needs and then tailor a program to get them where they want to be quickly and effectively. This is not some out of the box class room program.
At FortySix Web we donít just teach Joomla we are an active part of the community that supports and enhances the system that powers the websites we build. The Joomla CMS makes is possible for you to run your own website without the need to engage a developer every time you want to add or change something on your website. You just need a little help to get going and thatís where FortySix Web can get you up to speed.
Q. What do you like most about your job?
A. Building websites the old fashioned way just does not make sense anymore. With the advent of the Content Management System (CMS) the way websites are built and operated was completely revolutionized. One of joys we get from this business is delivering to our clients incredible websites at a fraction of the cost they assumed they would need to pay. Then, through our instruction program we empower the client to control the website without constantly needing to call us back in. Seeing the satisfaction of the client, even those with little or no technical skills, take control of their own presence on the web makes us get up every day and do it all over again.
Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A. Why should I choose Joomla over Drupal or Wordpress? Really it comes down to the power of numbers and the capabilities of the community. The richer the community support and involvement the better the platform functions and is supported. The Joomla Community is loaded with robust platform extensions, most of which are free, and the engaged and active support community ensures if you have a problem someone is there to help.
How long does it take to learn? Well thatís an individually answered question that depends a bit on what you may already know and what you need to know. General knowledge to understand the system basics and to be able to confidently handle your own sites content and operate the basic administrative functions (like backing up your site) on average takes between 8-10 hours of instruction. Of course Joomla is an extensive and powerful tool and mastery of the complete system and its detailed functionality will take longer.
Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?
A. My favorite story was from a client who had been through two developers and a couple thousand dollars and had almost nothing to show for it. Unfortunately I had to scrap everything the previous developers had done and start from scratch - it was a mess. However when I was able to deliver a superior website in performance and visual appeal for less money than they had spent up to that point they were thrilled. As we entered the instructional phase they simply glowed when they learned how much control they were going to have over their own site despite having no technical knowledge! They then bought me a brand new office chair to thank me! (the client was an office furniture outlet)
Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?
A. That I love doing what I do and it shows in my work and my dedication to each and every client. In addition I am a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and that means I approach every job with a discipline and focus on the details and meeting schedules and client requirements.
Q. What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?
A. Joomla is constantly changing and improving. A huge new version is just around the corner that offers a big leap forward for the tool. The platform is called Joomla 1.6 and one of the advantages over the current tool (joomla 1.5) is called "nested categories". While most sites don't need nested categories its pretty important for some of the massive corporate sites and the Joomla 1.6 platform should open up a whole new world for Joomla in these more complex and involved sites.
Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.
A. My most recent project was for a Architectural Firm and although it was a simple project I was really happy to be able to deliver it to the client in less than one week from start to finish including teaching them to run it by themselves. Over a month has gone by and they are doing great all by themselves! Check out their site at www.h2o-inc.net
