About
Expertise and experience. As both a composer and guitarist I've done work at the top of my field, and I have the teaching experience to convey those skills to my students effectively. The ah-ha moments in lessons are nice, but the most satisfying thing about teaching to me is seeing long-term growth in my students. After a few months of lessons, people are really different players than they are when they start, and it's very cool to watch that process.

Brandon is a superb teacher. I've had a couple of guitar teachers before but they pale in comparison to him. The classes never feel rushed and I love how we learn challenging new things in every class

I took lessons from Brendon for 2+ years and I can't say enough about how much I learned from him. I am dramatically better at guitar thanks to him. Brendon is a fantastic teacher for many reasons, but three stand out: 1) He has experience with many genres of music. Not "blues, jam, and rock" but flamenco, hardcore metal, and classical. For any given piece of music or technique I wanted to learn, Brendon could teach it because his background is so diverse. 2) He's creative with his lessons. Some days we didn't even pick up the guitar: we'd work on sight reading, singing intervals, and playing rhythms. This will make you a better musician in the long run. 3) He's really encouraging and understanding about your level of effort. If you want to improve, you need to practice consistently and put in the hours. There is no other way around it. But even if you can only practice 1 hour a week, he'll work with that and design his curriculum around your schedule. It's very important to create a positive feedback loop with guitar (or anything really): you need to have fun with it or it will feel like work and you won't do it as much. Brendon will help you progress no matter how much time you put in. Brendon truly helped me enjoy playing music again and helped me develop the tools to pick up other instruments as well. Take lessons from this guy!

When my friend referred me to Brendon I was expecting a guitar teacher. What I didn't realize was that I was getting a full blown musical savant. Brendon is an extremely knowledgeable and creative composer. He knows more about classical music theory than you would ever need to know to play the guitar. Classical theory is just the beginning, he also knows how to push the limits of abstract music creation including discordant and asynchronous compositions that are not just coherent but also will also make you want to listen to them again. He has the ability to take the most complex pieces of music you can think of and break them down for you into digestible pieces. As a guitarist Brendon has amazing capability. He is able to play any genre of music on both classical acoustic and electric guitars. He also fully utilizes these instruments with tricks such as playing percussion off and on the strings, using lighting fast harmonics, and even branching out to use different materials for dampening string vibration or picking. I have seen him play perfect transposed Bach sonatas, finger style solo improve jazz where he is playing both the chords and melody line, wicked math rock, and slayer. As a teacher Brendon is a very reactive teacher. I'm not sure how abnormal a student I was as I have a full-time project driven job and so there were months that I was able to devote a lot of time to music and month that I was not able to devote any time. No matter what condition I was in Brendon had something productive for me to do during the lesson. This also means that you get that for which you are prepared. Some things we worked on were: interval and ear training using my voice and solfège hand indicators making my fingering efficient by cutting out waste movement reading music improving solos and modulation specific pieces for me to learn that he transposed composition One thing that I especially enjoyed about Brendon was that he took the time to get me using some modern technologies such as composing and transposing using Guitar Pro and proper multi-track recording using Garage Band. In summary, Brendon is awesome. He took away all my obstacles ( and excuses ) and provided me with any curriculum I needed to drive me to create music.

Brendon was my most excellent classical guitar teacher for two years in San Francisco -- knowledgeable, kind, flexible, and a great sense of humor. Oh, and he kicks it on guitar, classical and otherwise.
