You love the guitar. You've sat and listened to your favorite guitarists and have said to yourself "Man, how do they do that? I want to play music like that!"

Perhaps you have an old guitar sitting in your closet or attic. You've picked it up on a rare occasion and thought, "Man, this isn't as easy as I thought."

If you love music and have a passion for the guitar, I want you to know that it is very possible to progress at a pace that will make you feel good!

My name is Joe. I am a New York native who has been working as a professional musician and private guitar, bass, drum, piano, and vocal teacher for approximately fourteen years. I am a graduate of the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, California and have attended New School University's Jazz Program.

I have been blessed to have been able to travel throughout the United States performing at venues such as B.B. Kings, Starbucks, and The Griffith Observatory in musical situations ranging from punk rock to reggae, and world music, to jazz and blues. I have also been very blessed to have released three solo albums in which all have received international airplay and have been featured in publications worldwide!

I have also been featured on MTV, The Village Voice, Ovation Television, and more. I have also written technical articles for Indie Music Magazine and Performer Magazine.

If there is one thing I am passionate about, it is music. Over my career, I have performed in just about every musical situation possible and would love to share my professional knowledge with you!

Here is what I can help you do musically:

* Learn to play your favorite songs
* Sound great in a band
* Learn to read music
* Learn to improvise in a way that gives your freedom
* Understand Music Theory
* Learn to compose your own music and write your own lyrics
* Take lessons with a patient and fun teacher that will help you accomplish your goals in the most direct manner

Learn to play guitar in these styles:

* Jimi Hendrix
* Eric Clapton
* Jerry Garcia
* Jimmy Page
* Stevie Ray Vaughn
* B.B. King
* Angus Young
* Trey Anastasio and more

I firmly believe that music lessons should not only be informative, they should also be tons of fun! I am very laid back and patient and I want you to know that I will work with your personal goals as a musician.

For example, one of my students has always wanted to learn to play Brazilian guitar and sing in Portuguese. We are taking her dream and turning it into a reality! If you practice daily with the criteria I set for you, you will be more than performance ready in 6 months! That's a personal guarantee!

I also work with students with special needs such as ADHD and autism.

What others are saying:

When choosing the right teacher, it's important to find someone who not only has excellent skills, but also a wide range of real world experience. With Joe DeVita, you get to study under an excellent professional guitarist with years of experience performing, composing, arranging, producing, and teaching. Most importantly, you will gain so much in depth insight from a truly dedicated student of music. He is a busy musician, but I encourage you to contact him about your guitar lessons.

I recently became interested in learning the piano and I was lucky to meet Joe. In just a couple months, I'm already learning to read music, improvising over jazz chords, and have even learned a couple pop songs. Whatever your level or particular area of interest, Joe figures out the right material for you and makes the learning process so much fun.

Joe DeVita is a wonderful instructor and a talented guitarist. As a teacher, he possesses great strength in finding the right technique to teach his students the fundamentals of guitar playing. He has an impressive ability to break down a song by ear and then translate it into instruction. If you're interested in picking up a guitar and producing more than a couple chords or random notes, I would strongly suggest giving Joe a call or shooting him an email. In 5 sessions, he was able teach me a page of chords and two songs, one in Portuguese and then in English. Not to say I didn't practice every night, I did! But, being able to understand what needed to be done to play a song was enough encouragement to keep me playing.

Joe is very adaptive in his approach to teaching. He knows that one of the most important characteristics of a teacher is to understand which way the student learns best. Additionally, Joe's relaxed attitude makes lessons fun and without any pressure, which is ideal for my learning style. I have personally recommended Joe to others and plan to continue my lessons long term.

Question and answer

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. No only am I a graduate of the Musicians Institute as well as New School University. I have performed in major venues throughout the United States, collaborated with artists from Atlantic and Warner Bros. records. I have also written technical articles for industry magazines. With my lessons you are not only getting someone with academic experience but someone who has and is working as a professional musician.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I simply love sharing my knowledge with students. I love watching my students progress and reach their goals. I love music and I am thankful for the opportunity to share that love with others.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Normally beginner students ask me for a time line as to how quickly they can master the guitar. I usually tell them that music is a life long education. There is no end to what someone can learn. However, to understand and master the basics I would say it takes about six months.
