JAZZ GUITAR & IMPROVISATION LESSONS.

We will cover all levels of music theory & harmony in a jazz and/or blues context and apply that knowledge directly to the guitar fingerboard. This includes scales, patterns, chords, arpeggios, lines, etc. We want to improve our instrumental techniques on pick control, relaxation of both hands, etc. but still, we would want to express ourselves musically.

We will study and play standard tunes and common chord progressions, and I will guide you through improvisation exercises and techniques that will eventually help you develop your own voice/style.

I have a lot of hand-outs, including chord solos that are harmonized melody of standard tunes and comping studies, which are fingered chord progressions.

I can also specifically help you with ear-training and reading.

I have played with Buddy Collette, Sonny Simmons, Norah Jones, Bruce Dunlap, Adam Levy (Tracy Chapman, Joey Baron, Norah Jones), Reid Anderson ("The Bad Plus"), Kenny Wollesen (Bill Frisell), percussionist Mingo Lewis (from "Santana"), African World Beat group "Zekele Sounds", and the "Broun Fellinis".

I currently teach Music Theory & Harmony at the San Francisco Academy Of Art University, and have taught guitar classes, music theory, jazz composition and improvisation workshops at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, WI and at the Conservatory of Music of Cannes, France.

I teach from Russo Music in Noe Valley, on 24th St. (@ Noe St.), and at the Sunset Music Academy in the Sunset District.

I only teach students age 18 and up.

Lessons can be done on-line through Skype, but ONLY if you are an intermediate to advanced student. Contact me for details!

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. As my posting description says, I specialize in Jazz and Improvisation-- meaning that this is all I teach. If you want to learn other styles (such as Folk, Pop, Rock, etc.) or if you are just interested in learning to strum chords so that you can sing, you may want to find another instructor on ThumbTack.com.

If indeed you are willing to learn more about Jazz and Improvisation and if you are unable to travel to San Francisco, CA where I'm based, we can do the lessons with SKYPE. Contact me for details.

Thanks!

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. 1. Am I really interested in learning about Jazz and Improvisation?

2. Am I willing to travel to San Francisco, CA for my lessons, or as an alternative, am I able/willing to use Skype?

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I only play Jazz and Improvisation, and that's all I teach. Because of my specialization I'm able to go more in depth into this study, as opposed to another instructor who might advertize for "All Styles". In this kind of music, versatility is usually not an advantage...

I have a lot of hand-outs and materials that complement the lessons. If the lessons are done with Skype, I usually e-mail scans and pdf. files ahead of the lessons.
