It's easier to get what you want when you know what you want. – Jan 30, 2012 at 2:49 pm
I teach English at all levels and for all skills. However, I specialize in writing for professionals, including research reporting, abstracts, proposals, and applications.
I offer expert assistance to working professionals in business English, American expression, and cross-cultural communication.
A. I work very effectively with research professionals who want to publish their findings in general fields such as medicine, law, and economics, as well as in highly specialized topics, such as data mining, genomic research, robotics, and gesture recognition.
Together, we prepare abstracts, proposals, data reports, review rebuttals, and conference presentations.
I also have great success helping students with their "Personal Statements" and other application documents required for entrance into colleges for both undergraduate studies and graduate level research positions.
I often work with young students to accelerate their writing potential (for college preparation and) to help them gain the most of their educational opportunities.
A. Try to communicate your goals for the long term and what you hope to achieve from each tutoring session.
- Don't sign up for a large number of sessions before you have an idea of how well you are engaged with the work.
- Even if you LIKE the tutor, your improvement depends much more on the amount of time and effort YOU make.
A. Will I see improvement in my abilities quickly?
-- Each session will bring you new information and practice in the skills you want to improve. My job is to monitor how much of that information you retain from session to session, and to devise curriculum that propels you forward in the direction you want to go.
-- Your advancement can be more focused if your goals are specific.
-- There can also be tremendous improvement with a more 'organic' approach (less specific goals), but your progress may be less readily observable.
A. My approach moves from highly instructive to highly collaborative. I begin by pointing out mistakes, teaching grammatical principles, and by behaving like a "bad reader" who misinterprets everything that can be misinterpreted.
From there, I become your collaborative partner helping you to attain the goal that your writing needs to achieve.
A. One of my students hired me because he was tired of sharing so much credit for his research with native speakers who only corrected his grammar mistakes but took full co-authorship credit for the paper.
On his own, his writing wasn't good enough to get published. Since I started working with him, every paper he has written has been accepted to the top journals in his field or for exclusive conferences of the highest prestige.
A. Teaching English to second language learners is like taking enrichment classes and studying global affairs. Every student has so much to teach about their own language, culture, and life experiences.
A. The tools of telecommunications bring me directly to your desktop in an instant. We can work together online with collaboration tools such as Skype, with its screen sharing function, Google docs, with its file sharing, markup, and synchronous editing features, or Go-to-meeting, with its advanced video conferencing capability.
A. If you spend a lot of time writing email messages, or if your emails aren't getting your point across the way you would like, I can assist you with instant answers during your work day. I provide advice, instruction, and expert editing with complete confidentiality and consideration for your valuable time. Regular students receive free "answers anytime" by instant text messaging.
