DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!!!!!!!!! This company is very disreputable, if you do not want to have a bad experience go with another company. Joey told me there was no need for an in person quote and that he could give me an accurate quote by my inventory list. I explained to him that much of my furniture was solid wood and very heavy. I even went into great detail to describe my hutch because it is a very large piece of furniture. He gave me a quote of $750 and assured me that it would not be much over that amount if any. I even chose to leave several pieces of furniture behind that had been listed in the original inventory list that Joey used to make my quote.

When the movers showed up (5 hours before the scheduled time) they said the amount would be closer to $1080 because of the heavy furniture. By this time it is to late to not go though with the move. In addition to everything else it took them till after 5 pm to load the truck with stuff from a 1 bedroom apartment (already packed by me).

    Rip Off Charges
I received an email on March 20 requesting $250 per month for storage after the end of the month. When I spoke to Joey he explained that the storage for the first month was free but would be $75 per pod per month. I called them after the email and explained that I would need to have my items stored for at least one additional month and the amounts discussed with Joey. At this time Ben tells me that my stuff needed to be in two pods, which I find out later that was a lie. My stuff fit perfectly into an 8 x 10 storage unit which is smaller than a pod (250 cubic feet). So that equates to another $75 in bogus charges that I should not have had to pay.

Another charge they added was for Additional Services and 9.25% tax for packing materials. First of all tax is 8.75% (I have turned this into the state as a fraudulent charge), second of all they took an old tore up card board box and covered the front of the TV with it, and did the same for a mirror of mine. I was told this was $15 each at the time they were taping up these items. Instead they have a charge of $200 for this. So here is another $170 dollars of bogus charges.

Also they say that they accept credit cards and checks according to their original Order for service form they give you, they made me have cash only. The company invoice that I was never shown, nor did I sign I found in a stack of papers they handed me as they were leaving. This broke down the charges and gave the names of the men who allegedly picked up my items. They state five men were there to move me when in reality there were only three.

When trying to arrange delivery Ben kept putting me off, when finally given a date for delivery the driver calls me the day before to indicate that he would not be able to make that delivery date and that they would be delivering at 6 am Monday morning. When I spoke to Ben (because I would have to miss work) he was rude and yelling at me on the phone. He was threatening me with charging an extra $125 per hour if I was not at the storage unit on time. He told me it was my fault the charges were so high because I never did the online inventory list, well unfortunately for Ben I saved a copy of the original online inventory list and of all correspondence between me and Joey about the price of the move and his comments on not needing an in person meeting.

To boot they charged me an extra $875.72 or they would not unload, again this had to be a cash payment. When they were unloading they refused to give me an opportunity to verify that all pieces were there. I will be spending my weekend verifying that all my boxes and furniture was delivered. With the unprofessionalism shown by this company I will be checking each item.

This company has no business class, completely unprofessional. I would not recommend them to my worst enemy. They lied, and relied on strong arm tactics. I spoke to a couple of other moving companies and they stated unfortunately this company has gotten away with treating customers poorly because people usually do not take the time to make the appropriate complaints.

Personally I am going to not only post this here I am going to the dot site and make my complaint there (the reason I chose this company was the lack of complaints posted there), and also on Angie’s List. Please if you feel strongly that you have been taken advantage of by this company please do the same.

I have taken the contract and the final paperwork to my attorney; he said he will review to determine if I have any recourse other than to continue to post about this company to warn others. I intend to post on some of these sites once weekly, it is time consuming but I really feel that I have been treated unfairly and the only reason companies get away with this type of unacceptable behavior is because people do not take the time to complain or do anything about it.

    Sites for complaint
    Better Business Bureau
    Ripoff.com
    Consumer Affairs
    Department of Transportation
    Yelp
Craigs List (especially in the San Jose area)
    Angie’s list
CBS News (yes I have made contact with David GoldStein the consumer advocate from CBS news, hopefully I hear back)

I will continue to research places to make my complaint:

If you have information on where else to post complaints about this company or if you want more information you can contact me at antigravityrose@yahoo.com using subject Horrible SMS Move.

I'm super stoked on these guys (especially Frank). I really don't know what all the other reviews are about, moving is stressful but these guys really helped me out. They were inexpensive, honest, and really put my worries of giving my life to a couple strangers to rest. I would recommend them to any of my friends. My Story: I found out a few days before my move that my bed wouldn't fit into a uhaul trailer so I needed to ship my car or my stuff from SF to San Diego a little over 500 miles. I called around and got general estimates of at least $1000 before all of the extra charges associated with moving. They also said they wouldn't be able to pick it up till next week. Then I called SM&S, they were very polite I told them what I needed to move they said that it was probably around 1000 LBS and that it would cost me $600. I was very excited and scheduled the pick up for Thursday(2days later) at 3 pm, they did tell me that they were squeezing me in so I was very appreciative. On the day of the pick up I got a call around 1 saying that they were backed up and asked if they could pick up tomorrow. I said it would be inconvenient for me and they said that they would be there in the early evening.(They told me ahead of time it was going to be a time crunch picking my stuff up on Thur.) Frank and his helper showed up that evening and to be honest I was freaking out because of the other Yelp Reviews and told Frank about my concerns. He explained their operation to me and made me more comfortable with the whole process. They picked up my stuff wrapped my TV's up (I paid the extra fee to have them wrap the expensive TV's) and off they were. They quoted me 3-5 days and total including tax and wrapping the TV's $700 and explained every bit of the extra $100 (I was expecting more of a mark up). 4 days later I got a call from Frank telling me they were a couple hours away and asked if they could drop off my items that evening. I said sure and two hours later they were there. All of my stuff was in the same condition it was in when I gave it to them. ; as far as I'm concerned that's exactly what a moving company should do. Thanks Frank and guys!

I was very worried about moving because I had some very fragile and expensive speakers and amplifiers but SM&S RELOCATION were fantastic. On time, very fast, the 3 great movers they sent me were extremely careful with my stuff. I highly recommend this moving company. I am on a budget and the quote I receive from them was the least expensive and well within my budget compared to some other companies, and they took care of my belongings perfectly.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. How to choose your mover

1. Most important is to make sure the moving company is Licensed by the Public Utilities Commissions.

2. Look at what other customers of the company are saying - Google review Mymovingreview

3. Check the record of the company with the BBB Better Business Bureau
"Make sure that the company in question does not have multiple listings", (1 Listing has no complaints & another has many)

4. When comparing estimates look for the following.
• Extra charges or hidden fees.
• Fuel charges, Long carry, stairs, credit card use.
• Does the company require a deposit? If yes how much?
• If your consultant lacks the knowledge to accurately estimate your moving needs, and he/she is not asking the right questions; STAY AWAY!!
• If the estimate is too confusing to read than your charges will be confusing as well.

5. Make sure your mover is a certified PRO MOVER by the American moving & storage association.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. The moving industry is a labor based industry. We offer convenient relocation services to people who might need a couple extra sets of hands to help them lug their furniture and valued belongings to their new home safely. Here at SM&S Relocation, we offer great rates for both moving and packing services.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. A customer should generally be on top of what is provided. Often you'll find different companies offer different benefits with their services. These benefits, not unlike prices, also vary dependent on whether or not your move is local or long distance. Some companies offer a variety of "free" services that come along with your estimate but other services such as packing services may cost extra. It's good to define what already comes included and what is offered at an additional cost.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. It's always good to budget. If you find yourself in the midst of relocating a 3 or 4 bedroom home but cannot afford professional movers for more than 6 hours, you may want to try and prepare your move prior to that company's arrival. It's always beneficial and cost efficient to limit how long you will actually need to use professional moving services. If this is the case for you, try to have everything packed, all of your furniture disassembled, and if possible try to keep everything you're moving limited to a couple of rooms. This will surely cut your total cost for moving in half.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Here at SM&S Relocation, we customize each of our quotes to fit each of our customers specific needs. Every move is different and every budget is different so we believe the more information we have, the more suited we make our quote to our customers specific needs. This way our customers aren't paying for a service they do not need.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. The best part of relocation is moving our customers into a new future. Moving can be both stressful and exciting. Picking the right relocation service provider is key to ensuring your move is successful and your new beginning starts out smoothly. The best part is getting that phone call after a move and our customers expressing their utmost gratitude and appreciation for getting them through this transition successfully.
