Design Process

The custom design for your project begins with a no-obligation free visit to your home by design staff. They take an active role in every project to assure that you will achieve your dream outdoor living area. Their creative expertise and years of experience ensure a unique design that compliments your home, lifestyle, and budget. A representative of California Smartscape will discuss your ideas for the site, offer innovative suggestions, and review your budget. After which a detailed proposal outlining the various elements of your design will be provided with associated costs. In some instances, this can be offered at the initial meeting pending the scope of the project. In some cases a design fee is required to prepare the full color, 3D, or CAD landscape design plan.

Construction Process

First, the design plan and proposal are presented to you. If there are any revisions to the design, the construction services proposal will be updated to reflect those changes. Upon acceptance of this proposal, we schedule the construction commencement date. It is very common to make changes during the construction process. If so, change orders are created and documented, reflecting any additional costs or credits. Our construction crews and contractors are experienced professionals who are dedicated to providing the highest quality workmanship. California Smartscape is an employee-owned company — you get the benefit of dealing directly with one of the two owners. We take great pride in our customer satisfaction. Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. This is always changing. These days typical projects include a moderate amount of hardscapes, retaining walls, pathways and some fencing. Then an abundance of plants with mulch, drip systems and anything else pertaining to saving water and adding value to your home. We often get calls for pergolas and decks too. Our carpentry staff is amazing!

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. My best advice is to hire someone that is licensed, as myself, and further more a company that can do everything. Too frequently people try and take shortcuts to save money, hire multiple people for different functions. Too often I get an urgent call, a plea for Help to fix what an un-licensed and inexperienced yahoo said that they can do. A licensed landscaper protects you and your family on many levels. It may cost a little more but in the long run, that isn't always the case.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. A cut above the competition, not only do we install hardscapes but we’re plant experts too, specializing in low-maintenance installations. We do it all so that your makeover can be consistent throughout your property. Call us if you prefer a one-stop landscaping solution rather than piecing together a project using multiple contractors. Too many business focus on one facet of the business and do not have experience with the "big picture". I've spent many years learning to present the very critical, "whole picture", to make your home or businesses landscaping cohesive.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. My favorite part of my job is making a place for families and individuals to create memories that will last a lifetime. Many of my childhood memories (and adult ones) reflect the good times, outdoors. To be able to share this with people is powerful to me. I can't imagine doing anything else.

Other things that make my career exciting are seeing a pile of materials, or some fuzzy ideas, turn into great things that make people say,WOW.

I love to visit my plant vendors and nurseries and hand selecting plants one at a time for clients. To be paid to drive up and down the nursery aisles on a sunny day, with conversations that I've had with customers in mind is a fortunate thing!

Lastly, I very much enjoy being a part of nature and teaching folks about it, especially being able to pass this knowledge along to my children.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Customers often ask, "Why didn't we do this sooner!"
Generally it's a good idea to take your time on your landscaping projects. It's wise to have a good plan and get results that exceed your expectations.
Many clients ask about drought tolerant plants and note that they don't want their yard to look like a desert. While low water species have been around for a zillion years. The idea of low water in Southern California is somewhat new and foreign to some folks. I like to point out that my choices in plants are lush and green, and many plants that I use from my palette bloom throughout the year!
