Helga edited my book, The Reason. Since it is my first book and a complex plot, it needed a lot of editing and polishing. Helga was always courteous and professional, and always met the deadlines that we had agreed upon. She understood my novel well and what I was trying to accomplish. She gave positive criticism as well as areas that had to be changed and corrected. She never told me what I wanted to hear, but what I needed to hear to make my project a better book and me a better writer. She was available for phone and email consultation both day and night and weekends. I learned a tremendous amount from her and would not be the writer I am today without her. Of course the proof is in the manuscript and I have had multiple publishing offers and my book will hit bookshelves next spring. I highly recommend Helga and welcome any further inquiry of me.

Helga edited my first novel. She did an evaluative edit first and then a line by line edit. The first edit was about two weeks once she was able to begin my job. She was very encouraging every step of the way. She guided me through the process of telling my story clearly by asking the right questions, drawing the right conclusions, and offering the right suggestions to help me reach down and pull more from inside to tell my story. She impressed me from the beginning because she clearly saw my intent and her comments led me to conclude that I needed to make improvements. She was a little late on the second edit- as in not completing it at the time she said- but it didn't matter because I didn't really have an urgent time schedule to keep because I self-published. I intend to request her services for my next novel.

I have worked with Helga for over ten years. She has edited three of my books, all of which were accepted for publication. Helga is an excellent editor. She is a conscientious and thorough editor. She has not only edited my work, she has helped me shape my work to make it the best it can be. I highly recommend her services.

Helga Schier edits with thoroughness and precision, identifying problems from plausibility to punctuation. She offers constructive suggestions and encouragement. My "literary political thriller" benefitted tremendously from her skillful and timely help. This was my first novel. She was a patient teacher as well.

During the last six years Helga Schier has been my editor on a series of six books, one a year, entitled "Blood on the Stage," covering milestone plays of crime and punishment produced in the 20th century. Helga has proven to be supremely energetic, perceptive and scholarly, with a hawk-eye for details. The books have received several awards, all due to her faithful contribution.

FAQs

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

I offer all editorial services to published, self-published and not-yet published writers of book-length fiction and non-fiction. An evaluation/critique looks at conceptual issues and discusses plot, character development, continuity, structure, pacing, style, and overall impression. I will make specific comments in the margins of the manuscript, and supply a general written evaluation (usually more than eight pages) of the strengths and weaknesses of your work including ways to improve upon them. These efforts will sharpen your vision. Line editing builds upon that, actually making necessary changes on a line-by-line basis. I will suggest cuts, additions, and changes and look at remaining conceptual, structural, and organizational issues. These efforts will refine your voice. Proofreading/copyediting polishes the manuscript. I will make sure that your manuscript contains no more inconsistencies … that ‘Allan’ is always ‘Allan,’ and not sometimes ‘Allen’ or even ‘Ellen.’ These efforts will prepare your manuscript for agents or publishers. Every manuscript will improve greatly with any of these services. Some, but not all manuscripts may need all these services.
