Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Always look for a massage therapist that is Nationally Certified, as well as California certified by the CAMTC - these therapists have had extensive training in Anatomy, Kinesiology, Physiology, Pathology, and Professional Ethics, along with many modalities and techniques from around the world. Never, ever, ever go to a massage therapist if pregnant unless that therapist has a minimum 34 hour additional certification course in Maternity Massage... you need to ask to see his/her pregnancy certification.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. In California, there is no required state certification for massage therapy. Requirements vary from city to city. Many therapists have only taken a one or three week course, and then call themselves "Certified Massage Therapists."

As of January 2012, nobody may call themselves a Certified Massage Therapist unless they are certified through the CAMTC... ask to see their certification. This will give you peace of mind that they have taken at least 500 hours from an approved school, and have had a complete background check.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. 1. "How long have you been a massage therapist?" Ideally, you want to see a therapist that has been in business for at least four years, as the first thousand bodies are considered "practice."
2. In California, as "Are you certified through the CAMTC?" If yes, ask to see a copy of their certification. Outside California, be sure they are Nationally Certified.
3. "What modalities do you use?" (For example, someone with edema should visit a therapist specifically trained in Lymphedema Massage.)
4. "Do you require a medical intake form to be filled out before our first session?" If no, choose another therapist.
5. If you are pregnant, ask, "Do you have a separate minimum 34 hour certification in Maternity Massage?" If yes, ask to see a copy of that certification.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. 1. Please do not visit a chiropractor within 48 hours before or after a massage session.
2. Allow at least another half an hour with your chosen session for going over your medical form, getting on and off the table, etc.
3. Do not pack in a lot of things to do right before and especially after a session. You do not want to be late for your session, and afterwards, your body needs time to stay relaxed and calm.
4. Be sure to drink plenty of water for three days after a session, as massage gently moves toxins that need to be flushed out.
5. Please visit Kathy's website and choose the type of session and length of session before calling to schedule. Scheduling is only done by phone, not email. Thank you!

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Few, if any, therapists in Northern California are as well trained and have taught massage both in Florida and in California. Kathy consistently hears the words, "That was the best massage I have ever had in my life!" A combination of skill, experience, empathy, caring, and love for her work makes all the difference.
