Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Ask what type of insurance they carry, as well as for a list of references. Never pay more than 50% of the price agreed upon before the job has started. I recommend an additional 25% payment at installation, and the balance of 25% upon removal.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. It is not necessary to always do the same type of decorating. Try to rearrange your decor elements each year; maybe not even put everything out every single year. If you used straight line lighting one year, use icicles the next. If you wrapped a tree trunk one year, maybe just put lights in the canopy of the tree the next year. Do you always use white lights? Why not add some color? Try to keep colors coordinated so that they don't appear hodge-podge. Perhaps use solid green on all of your bushes, and red or multi-colored in your flowerbeds. Be creative!

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. How long have you been in business?
How long has your staff been working with you?
How do you train your staff?
Do you test your staff for drugs and immigration status?
Do you personally supervise each job, or do you come by to check on your workers? How often?
Who is the supervisor for my job? What is his/her cell number?
What is the best telephone number to reach you at?
Do you offer free service calls, or at least the first service call for free? What do you charge for service calls after the first one, if it is free?
May I have a list of your references?
What training do you have to be in this business?
How long have you been in this business?
