Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. When hiring a Web professional, it is important to compare apples to apples. Write out what you want your Web site to do. If someone suggests a new feature, be sure to let the other bidders know so they can add it to the list.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Web designers often like to do project work, then they disappear once the site goes live. Be sure to find someone who has a record of sticking around. You will know this if a) they offer maintenance packages/service b) their references state they are dependable and are quick to respond. If you have a site that allows you to manage most of the content, then even better, but you need to know that if you run into a problem, your Web pro is there to help answer questions and offer training.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Web professionals will often tell you what "features" you will get with your site. It is better if you can ask them what the "benefits" are to your business. For example, a feature you might want is a Content Management System (CMS), the benefit of that is the ability for the business owner to add to or change much of the site contents themselves.
