Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. There is no normal is this industry. No home and furniture combo out there are the same. It seems to change with the seasons, sometimes its all apartment moves ,then its all 3-6 bedroom homes. One of the reasons I love the industry its never the same and always interesting. The only common I see is the patterns in the moving in or out , upgrade or downgrade, as well as what times of the year is busy and when is not. I do have alot of young family moves , families with young kids. I have quite a few college move ins and outs through out the year as well as people moving into or out of storage units.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. To choose carefully and to stay clear of labor companies charging minimum wage. Daily labor is a cheap way but a fast way to get alot of damage from people that don't know how to move and load correctly

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. It is best for my customers to leave drawers in dressers as it adds support and reduces space. Also a customer takes apart all beds and mirrors it will reduce the time and cost of a mover to do it. Also Make sure to rent pads it is well worth the extra cost.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. Customer should figure out the size of home vs the size of truck used. I have seen a 14 ft uhaul outside of a 4 bedroom house and that means 4 trips if it all goes. Also consider storage unit size vs truck size if need be.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. We have 12 years of moving and packing experience and offer competitive prices and proffessional services. We have many happy customers who've referred us and we can provide you those reviews upon request.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. Being personable with all our customers and learning about people from all walks of life and places of the country. Whether its helping someone move a couch or an elderly couple relocate, knowing we make a difference is what makes our job worth it. Being an active person, I enjoy a hard days work and being outdoors.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Q. How do you do this work all the time? A. Keeping within reach of my goals, meeting new people, and getting a workout while earning money for my family. With 12 yrs. experience, we have learned the proper ways of maneuvering furniture with care and expertise.

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. I once had a 16 ft table from 1877 and it was crane lifted throw the window in Austin Texas. Me the table and my helper where on the top of elevator inside the shaft while the customer was inside the elevator. Of course with maintance supervison. Was the most interesting of all.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. That I have moved and loaded trucks for over 12 yrs and that I will pack the truck the best possable way to ensure no damage and maximize space in the shipping unit used in job.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. I was a college student and needed work. I realized I was strong and had a knack for moving. After 12 years of practice 6-7 days a week I became pretty well seasoned in this industry.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. I had a move a few weeks ago that really made me feel good. In the Littleton area of town I helped a single mother and her two sons move. It was alot of furniture and took a total of eight hours to complete the job. Her son was 12 and was a great kid. He did have a learning issue of one kind or another but such a smart young boy. When we got to the drop of (new house) the three bully kids from his school that had picked on the boy for 4 years lived next door and made rude comments to the boy. Now keep in mind all these boys are 12 ish. I went and talked to the bullies and told them how mean it was and that I was the boys cousin and lived close by. Needless to say the bullies decided to leave the boy alone. I felt proud as can be after helping a great kid and sticking up for him when no one else could.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. There is not much you can do in the moving industry as it does not change so much in the labor aspect. Its all about protecting the customers furniture no matter how nice or not , how costly or modest, no matter if the customer tells me dont worry about if it gets ruined. I as a mover will still treat the furniture as if it where a egg shell.

Another aspect of moving is the packing and padding in the truck. Not much will change here as the key is to safely pack it all in so it will not shift and with having the solid and stronger furniture on the bottom and the lighter fragile on the top. All wood and glass must be covered as well as any steel or painted areas.

Q. What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?

A. The only change in the moving industry is the housing market and lately it has been sad. I have sadly seen alot of good people losing their homes and companies due to the poor state of the economey. I have seen alot of people forced to leave a huge home and go to a small apartment and a storage unit. I have seen this come and go over the years and I just hope I stop seeing the sad and start seeing more people happy and buying new homes again. I have heard from realestate people I work with that this may soon be the case but I for one can not say for sure but I can only hope as it has not been as enjoyable lately as I have seen so many sad situations

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. I had a customer outside of Denver CO in the mountains and she had a eighteen wheeler loaded with furniture that was to be delivered to her new home but the driver said he could not get to her home due to sharpe mountain roads. The truck was parked 1.5 miles away and we rented two 17 foot box trucks and shuttled her furntiure to the new home. We also moved and put togeather her grande piano.

This was a three man job and it took 10 hours at the hourly rate we offer, As well as the piano fee and trip charge. The total on the move was $690. We also include all the shrink wrap and tape we use to protect your furntiure at no cost to you.

Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.

A. I have three methods used in priceing. I will start with my least used to my preferred method. First is by weight, that is difficult to make a true bid on your job plus extra fees are involved due to driving to and using the scale. Second option is by the hour ( times how many men) plus a trip fee, this is the most common style moving price system. It works but is not 100% accurate as it can seem like a 6 hour job but ends up being 8 or 9 hours. This is not uncommon in the moving industry. Third and my favirote is the iteamized way. Its like going shoping , The truck is the cart , the mover is the cashier and the furniture is the food. A queen bed is X amount , a dresser is X amount so on and so on. Plus a trip fee but once you give me every iteam on your list there is a 100% promised price and will not change no matter how fast or long the job takes.

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. To first go look for a company that was hiring and go out on moves for as many days a week as they can handle and see if it is meant for them before they buy a truck or trailer or anything of the like. I would also advise them if they smoke ciggerettes as I used to that it would be a very wise choice to let that go as it will hurt your preformance alot as well as throat while breathing so much. Another reason to quit is because alot of customers will get upset if you put that smell on there furniture, many dont want you to take a smoke break as they hired you to work and not stand around and smoke. You have to put the customers wishes first as its their home, furniture, and money here and you must respect them.

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. Alot of customers have asked me if there was any time saving tips or any advice for moving prep that I could give them as they had little or no moving experiance and I have 12 industry years.

One thing that will save time is if it is at all possiable to bring things up or down the stairs to the ground level of the home. this will shave off alot of time but is not always possiable. Another time saver is if you or someone you know is handy and can unbolt hutch tops or bed frames as well as mirrors over top of dressers. If you know a door must come off to pass a large item if you are able to remove door before move starts. All of this will speed the move up.

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. I have been asked several times over the years by customers if they should wrap and pad up the furniture before the movers arrive in order to save time and in the end their money as the move will take less time?

Well there is a up and a down side here. First the up and the main issue for the question. Yes that will save you money as it will save a half up to maybe a hour depending on how much furniture you have. But the other side to this is as movers we have certian ways we pad things for protection and for fitting things in to tight spaces in order to not allow movement will driving. Also the other reason is if movers show up and there is a pad or shrink wrap on a dresser then we have to guess where the drawers are and where sharpe metal is and hope to not damage other things. So in the end its up to the customer's best judgement as to what the want to do in this case

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. I am often asked after the move has already started if it is they (the customer) should empty drawers and remove them from dressers, fridge, chest of drawers and so on?

Well as far as the drawers go I recommed to leave to leave everything in the drawers of dressers and chest of drawers. Now do keep in mind to first remove anything breakable i.e. glass and electronics as shifting around may damage and or break these things. Also i only recommend this if the piece in question is a solid wood piece. If its partical board, and/or not able to support weight of over 100 lbs or if its "wobbly" remove everything. As for the fridge, I recommed everything to be take out because glass and spillage and worse can happen on your drive to your new location.
