Welcome to the wonderful world of music lessons. I am a professional performing musician and recently earned a doctorate in classical guitar from the esteemed Eastman School of Music. I have taught guitar and mandolin for the past six years.

I teach to the highest standards, and aim for my students to be not just guitar players, but complete musicians. All of my students learn to read music, learn solid and correct technique, and the fundamentals of music theory as they apply to the music you learn with me. I teach not only classical guitar, but rock, country and bluegrass, and beginning jazz guitar.

My students have ranged in age from 6 to 83 (never too late to start!), and in abilities from total beginners to college guitar majors. I offer hour, quarter-hour, and half-hour lessons.

I have been on faculty at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY, the Eastman Community Music School, and in the summers at the Rocky Ridge Music Center. I currently perform with the Colorado Guitar Quartet, Story and Clark, and Magpie, in addition to solo work. I have also played with the Denver Mandolin Orchestra.

We highly recommend Ben Altman! We have welcomed Ben into our home for over 2 years teaching Guitar lessons to our daughter. She started her interest in Guitar at age 9; so we sought out instruction and were introduced to Ben. He was patient and kind to our beginner musician. Now age 12, she continues to strive and excel at playing this beautiful instrument. As parents without any guitar experience, we were apprehensive about not being able to help with instruction in between lessons. We have solely relied on Ben and have been absolutely amazed at how she has improved beyond our expectations! She started with 30-minute classes and has now graduated to 1-hour lessons with Ben every week. Ben embodies professionalism and perfection. He is extremely patient and easy tempered. Our daughter has appreciated his quiet and efficient way of teaching. She responds well to his positive reinforcement and expectation of responsibility from her. We are thrilled with our experience with Ben and would recommend him for any musical instruction.

I have known Ben Altman since he came to Denver in 2008 and joined the Denver Mandolin Orchestra. He is a fabulous guitar and mandolin player and I have greatly enjoyed playing with him and learning from him in the DMO and other groups. I took private lessons from Ben. His practical and insightful approach helped me make big improvements in my guitar playing technique. Ben is a top class musician and a professional in every sense of the word.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. I am a trained professional with years of experience. I take what I do very seriously, though of course my aim is to make learning as fun as possible. Therefore, a customer should trust that my program and methods will work, given the right dedication and practice from the student.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. What are your qualifications?
What are your educational credentials?
Do you have performing experience?
Will there be opportunities for your students to perform?

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. To avoid frustration, students (especially working adults) should consider whether they can make the time commitment to daily practice, even if only a little. I have a world of information and skill to impart, but I can't practice for you! Learning music is learning a new sport and a new language, in addition to artistic expression and fulfillment.
