Question and answer

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Alot of people ask me how I get so much done so quick.
Its just years of doing the same stuff over and over. I cant do what they can for the same reason. You just develop a routine that sticks eventually, regardless of the job or situation.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. My experience with turning raw harvested wood into custom furniture and home features has taught me a great deal about the value of a lasting product. The homes I have built in the past are guaranteed for life because of this learning. I may not build homes anymore but I still do my best to stay invested in my work, from painting a door to building a custom deck.
I get lots of compliments from my awesome customers but the most satisfaction i get is when i know I built or repaired something that will last a long time.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. Honestly I like making customers into friends. Ive only ever had a pretty small group of close personal friends but when I earn trust from a customer its a specific relationship where they really rely on me. It just feels nice to be helpful and valuable, and following through for them with something important feels great.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. "How much do you charge?" I usually say that I run the middle. You see, the $20/hr hack jobs create a bunch of work for me when they do low quality work for my potential customers, and the older ex-builders and service companies charge up to $120/hr. I usually charge from $40/hr to $60/hr. Im always willing to bend for those who need it, everything is open for discussion.

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. In North Carolina I was completely remodeling a large fancy cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I cleared some huge poplars from the land and I dried, milled, built and installed very burly staircase. It was beautiful, and when the first tree fell it knocked over a smaller poplar that I wasnt concerned with. When the smaller one fell the roots came up and I found an old Civil War pistol! Its was pretty old and rotten so the homeowner let me have it, thanks Jim.
