Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Ask questions and get clarification for anything you do not understand, especially warranties. Do not be bullied into signing a contract on the spot by a salesperson. Compare apples to apples when reviewing your bids as sometimes the least expensive is using the very least on your project. In addition, your insurance company can not dictate to you which company to use, it is always your choice. This is a large investment so take your time and do your homework.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Most roofing companies subcontract their crews in order to escape paying employment taxes and high insurances thereby pushing the burden to the subcontractors which may or may not carry the appropriate insurances. It also allows the roofing company to point the finger of blame should something go wrong with your roof or not pass inspection. We have seen many consumers fall victim to this unfortunate situation.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. 1. Are your crews your employees or is your work subcontracted out?
2. What is the experience of your crew?
3. Are you a local business and are your crews local?
4. Are you certified by any manufacturers?
5. What are the warranties and what do they cover?
6. Are the warranties fully transferable?
7. Can you provide me proof of insurances?
8. Do you recycle the shingles?
9. What is your process and what can I expect?
10. Do you have references?

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. As more and more hail storms hit Colorado, how many claims have you had in the last 10 years? Insurance companies are now looking at claim history as far back as 10 years and may drop or significantly raise your rates if you, as a consumer, do not invest in high impact resistant shingles. In addition, how much money could you save each year by installing a high impact solution? How many years will you be staying in the house? Consider how long you will be in your house, how much you will save each year and at what year will you have your return on investment. This can also be a selling feature of your home if that is your goal.
