Every student has the potential to shine. I teach each individual child learning strategies that prepare him or her to complete homework, prioritize and breakdown projects, manage time, and improve their academics by building on the basics. I have been teaching children for the past 15 years in diverse environments and a variety of grades.

I am a CT certified teacher, currently working in middle school with children who "learn differently". I am fondly known by many students as Mrs. Cookie. One young lady entering the 7th grade has been happy to meet with me weekly since 4th grade to keep her math skills sharp. I tutor middle school, from 5th to 8th grade, in math, language arts and sciences.

I have some after-school hours available and 1 Saturday morning slot. Request for resume and references are welcome.

Please call, or e-mail, so that we all can meet at your local library to discuss a mutually beneficial relationship.

The teacher who listens learns from the student. Thank you.

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. When tutoring pre-algebra emphasis is on a) the basics, students do best when basic operations are regularly reviewed b) preparing for quizzes and tests: this involves teaches strategies to best prepare your student to be a confident test taker.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Teachers who also tutor know that kids often feel "different" having a tutor. Your tutor must have the experience to "read" your child's attitude whether it be resistant or enthusiastic and adjust the tutoring relationship accordingly.

Family schedules are important. Flexibilty and communication are the mark of a professional.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Tutors who also teach can often communicate directly with your child's teacher even in another school system: we all speak the same "language" of education , have similar curriculum as required by CT State Standards.

Having a three way communication between the parent, teacher and tutor allows your tutor help your student prepare for upcoming quizes, tests and projects.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Ask the tutor if he/she minds if you observe the first session (from a distance). This will enable you, the parent, to gauge your student's degree of comfort and then make suggestions for future sessions. Also, it may give younger students peace of mind when first meeting a new teacher/tutor.

Ask for a resume and go over it briefly with the tutor to understand its highlights.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. Kids. I love to watch children grow, to watch them when that "light bulb goes off" when they finally get that concept they may have stuggled with. Teaching students that it is not about BEING smarter it is about WORKING smarter.

I have the experience to show kids how to work smarter.
