My goal is to give your child (aged 3-8) a solid grasp of the early math and reading skills they will need to be successful in school. My experience is in teaching preschoolers to make sure they have the skills to be ready for kindergarten, and teaching reading and arithmetic.
ESL
I have experience in teaching children who speak a language other than English at home. I have a master's degree with a bachelor's in child psychology, and am also a grammar expert who has worked as a professional editor and proofreader.
Cursive
Most schools spend little or no time teaching cursive, which is an important skill for writing efficiency, especially in high school and college. I can give them the extra help they need to master their penmanship.
Phonics
If a child starts falling behind in school before they reach 3rd grade, it is usually because there was a basic skill that was not mastered; whether it is phonics, fine motor skills, writing, counting, or arithmetic. I fill in the blanks by finding that skill and going back to work on it until it is mastered. The child will enter 3rd grade with the solid building blocks in place for being successful in school.
Math
Often children have difficulty with multiplication if they went too quickly through addition and subtraction. The same is true for division. You can be assured that your child will receive the reinforcement he or she needs in order to advance in their school work.
If your child needs extra help to make school work easier, I have the patience to get them working well at their level and beyond. I give one-on-one attention with lesson plans that focus on each child's individual needs and abilities. Contact me to schedule an appointment. I can come to your home or library at your convenience.
Question and answer
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. I enjoy working one on one with a child, getting to know them: their strengths and weaknesses, and their interests and personalities. I also have fun creating lesson plans and doing research in order to give a child the best learning experience possible. I develop a personal rapport with each child and love to help them develop the confidence they need to succeed in school.
Q. What do you like most about your job?
A. I love that I am able to give my students the individual attention they need to supplement what they get in school. Working with a child one-on-one gives me the opportunity to listen and assess a child's difficulties quickly, as well as create an individualized lesson plan.
Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A. I am often asked whether the child is on track for his/her age or grade. Generally a child should be able to write his/her first name by the time they start kindergarten, and know the alphabet and count to 10. He or she should be able to read simple books by 1st grade by knowing consonant blends and being able to sound out most words. By 1st grade a child should also be able to count to 100 and begin addition.
Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.
A. Last year, I met an 8-year-old Korean boy whose family was planning to move to the United States. He had learned some basic English in Korea before he traveled to the U.S. but needed my help with sentence structure and increasing his vocabulary. He was excited to begin attending an American school. We used additional media to help get him used to speaking and understanding more comfortably.
Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?
A. I am working on my Connecticut teacher certification this year. I am in the library every week doing research on the best teaching methods. I go to bookstores for current information about the latest developments in education, and of course I keep up on the news. It's important for me to know about the educational standards and procedures used in the school districts.
