Brad Demotte has been the architect working on my house in Westchester. Building a house is a difficult process and finding a great architect makes all of the difference. Brad has been amazing to work with!!!. He responds instantly with honest feedback and good ideas. He designs the house for the way you want to live in it. He thinks of your family and lifestyle in every room. Brad makes you feel like your project is so important even if it is not the biggest thing he is working on. I have never seen such a level of pride and professionalism. Although my house is still in design phase I feel comfortable I am with the right architect. So far is has been the best choice we have made. I want to thank brad for helping us through this difficult process. I look forward to someday living in my beautiful home designed by DeMotte Architects.

I was so lucky, happy and grateful that I hired Brad as the architect to design my dream home. He is such a good person and was very professional from start to finish. He listened to my ideas as we designed the house together & incorporated those ideas. He paid attention to all my wants & needs, then took those and enhanced them. His suggestions were very valuable, which I always took into serious consideration. His response to my requests in any form, whether by phone, mail, e-mail, or message were always prompt. His professional work quality is outstanding.......I think you would agree with me if you look up those pictures of my dream house. A picture equals thousands of words. Everything about him is excellent. I was so grateful for his service, that I put his name on my house corner stone (see picture attached), from which you can see my appreciation.

I hired this firm to design an addition to my home in Bethel. The price was originally $14,000 but Mr Demotte told me that due to the size of the addition that we should increase the price to $16,000 to cover the additional work needed for his time. When Mr Demotte submitted his final bill to me he claimed to have not tracked his time and the additional cost would be almost $8,000 but he was going to give me a "discount" and reduce the cost to $6500. I told Mr. Demotte that this was not the agreement. I had already spent $16,000 and had nothing to show for it. I felt trapped and extorted but wanted to see if the design created would be approved by the village so I brought the designs to them prior to resolving with Mr Demotte. They had a question and contacted the firm directly. I was shocked to lean that Mr Demotte told a Village official that I had not paid for his work and did not have the right to use his design due to the balance. I am now filing grievances with the Connecticut Department of Consumer Affairs and will have to go to court to receive my $16,000 back from the firm if they dont refund it. I think they've done this type of thing before and unless this firm is the last one on the planet I wouldn't use them. Really bottom of the barrel.
DeMotte Architects's reply
Mr. Odmann, It’s unfortunate that you’ve chosen to air your grievance publicly, especially considering this matter was resolved in your favor a year ago. I wasn’t going to reply, but I believe it’s unfair that potential clients hear only one side of this story. We met in December 2015 & I wrote a proposal with a $14,000 fee which was never acted on. You contacted me a year later & I wrote a proposal with a $16,000 fee with time cap, since there was an increase in the scope of work. For various reasons which is fairly common in this profession, we exceeded the time cap and the additional time was billed at a discounted hourly rate as allowed by the contract. As you know, we have since resolved the issue and I wish you the best of luck on your project. Readers - Please read my many reviews on demottearchitects.com and Houzz. Thanks!

My partners & I are developers, primarily doing spec high end residential projects in Greenwich & the surrounding area. This project in particular involved the design of a 2 family luxury townhouse on a very tight infill site near downtown. Each house was approximately 6,600 SF with high end finishes, with the exterior to be classic & timeless. Approximate sale price $5,000,000.Our interior designers recommended Brad DeMotte after working with him on other projects, as they were very impressed with his work. After meeting with him as well as other architects, we chose to hire Brad based on his experience......specifically his design ability & the quality of the construction drawings. The initial design concepts were very close to our vision & program, so he was clearly listening & responding to our comments. As the design developed, it just kept getting better as it was being refined. Getting the initial concept right is one thing, but we were equally impressed with his design ability to develop it further down to the little details. He was always very responsive (whether by phone or email) & always met our deadlines. The construction drawings were equally impressive....very detailed, accurate & thorough. We didn't involve Brad during construction because we really didn't need to, as the drawings were that good. We can't say we've had the same experience with other architects who were nonresponsive during construction when questions or problems arose. He did visit the project numerous times during construction & offer advice, even though not being paid to do so. To me, this says a lot about his customer service & that he truly cares about his projects. In summary, we were very impressed with Brad & would surely hire him again & recommend him to others.

We would highly recommend Brad DeMotte and his team. Brad is professional, patient, very responsive and incredibly thorough. He has a great sense of design and understands how to make a new addition transition seamlessly into the existing structure. Brad is a great listener, but he is also not afraid to make recommendations based on his extensive experience with the design and construction process. Brad is creative and talks through options, shares ideas and sketches during design meetings and makes great suggestions. My husband and I were impressed with the thoroughness of his work. He is well informed about zoning laws and the overall construction process with regard to obtaining permits. His plans are extremely detailed and clear. We are in the process of bidding out our project and every builder we have met with has commented on the level of detail, saying that they wished that all the architects they work with had drawings as detailed as Brads. Finally, Brad has a lot of integrity and is sensitive to budgetary constraints. We would not hesitate to work with Brad again.

FAQs

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

I do a wide range of projects in any given year, ranging from large custom homes, smaller modest homes and additions & remodeling projects of all sizes. I try not to turn down work, & will do finished basements, finished attics, decks, etc. While I have my own personal preferences, I design houses in a wide range of styles (shingle style, colonial, farmhouse, arts & crafts, etc.).

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

The architectural phase is the most important part of the project....this truly is money well spent. Investing in good design is the single best dollar you can spend when building. Trust your design professional, as they have a wealth of knowledge to share with you. Be aware that there is a wide range of talent out there, & you will get what you pay for. Look for an architect whose work resonates with you, as that is a sign of compatibility.
