Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Roof replacement of metal, shingle, slate and rubber roofs. Also, general roof repair and painting, installing new skylights, hatches and gutters and downspouts are all a very important part of our work.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Work with a proven contractor who can offer quality, experience and integrity.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. You should have your roofing contractor provide digital photos of the roof work he is suggesting. Don't engage a contractor who is going door to door offering discounted services "today only".

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. What are you areas of specialty?
Do you offer free inspections?
Do you have examples of roofing projects you have worked on?
Do you provide consumer education about roofing services?

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. If possible, be able to provide information about roofing work that has been done in the last few years, provide the age of the roof and the type of roof, if available.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. As a family, we have been in the roofing business for more than 90 years. We have worked for thousands of customers and our reputation is very important to us. We will do what we need to do to make the customer happy. Not all roofing contractors have this commitment to customer service.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I like the variety of the work; every project is different. The interaction with customers, all of whom have different needs, is very interesting. It keeps me fresh and challenged!

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. The two most prevalent questions are:
What is the price for your work? (Depends on the work)
When can you do the work? (Depends on the weather and the work queue)
Other questions are:
What is your experience? (Family has been in business 90+ years)(New customers ask this)
Do you provide free inspections? (Yes).

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. The business was started by my great-grandfather more than 90 years ago on Capitol Hill. When I was very young, I remember watching my great-grandmother sitting on a chair by the window taking customer calls and making appointments for my great-grandfather. It was a real family business and still is!

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. I write educational articles for customers and prospective customers about different types of roofing systems, materials, etc. These articles are on my website. It is important for customers to know about options especially when they are considering a new roof.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. As I have said, the work was in the family. My father purchased the business from my great-grandfather and when I was very young I went on a ladder for the first time and was a roofer's helper and observed all the different aspects of roofing and how to do the work. I learned from my father to treat the customer fairly and with respect. After a career as an executive in financial services, I returned to roofing and am thrilled with my choice!

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. I like to solve roofing problems for customers. One recent customer had a new roof installed by another roofing company and had numerous problems after the work was done. Within 2-3 years she knew that she had to have the leaking stopped once and for all and the other roofer stopped coming back to try to repair his work. She turned to us and was very pleased at our price for the new roof and was thrilled that she could go to sleep in a thunder storm and not have to worry about the roof leaking again. I live for that type of customer satisfaction.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. I am an avid reader of roofing magazines and newsletters to keep up with current trends.

Q. What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?

A. More energy efficient roofing systems and solar panel systems installed on roofs are the important trends that will continue for the future.

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. A customer had a very old standing seam tin roof that was in need of extensive repair and painting at a minimum. I offered an option of replacing the entire roof with a new metal, a non-metal roof (less expensive option) or doing extensive repairs and painting. The customer chose the latter option and was very happy that this work could extend the life of her roof and save her money today.

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. The market is extremely competitive. What can set you apart from the competition is how you treat the customer. Assuming you can do the technical roofing work, then really focus on customer service, timely service and follow-up.

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. What are the most important factors to you when seeking a roofing contractor?
Reliability, customer service reputation, quality of work, integrity and fair pricing.

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. Should I replace my roof with a new metal roof or a non-metal roof (this is for low slope and flat roofs)?
It depends on your time-frame of how long you will own your home, what your budget is, what appeals to you quality wise and aesthetically and how important it is to you to feel secure about what you have over your head! Metal roofs are more expensive in the short term but will last as long as 50-75 years (versus 10-15 years for a non-metal roof) and require much less maintenance than non-metal roofs.

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. Do you want a roofing contractor that has a long term outlook and wants to educate his customers and treat them fairly and with respect?
YES!
