Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: Over a decade ago, I adopted a small black spaniel mix who began displaying severe fearful behaviors and leash reactivity several weeks after I took her home. We enrolled in classes at PetSmart, I researched and within weeks I watched Baylee blossom into a confident, happy, goofy little dog. Seeing her transform and experiencing the bond that helping her through her struggles in a positive way impacted our relationship solidified my choice to pursue a career in the Animal Welfare field (a career which has lasted over a decade), a BaS in psychology with an emphasis in behavior modification and eventually starting a training business of my own. I use science based positive reinforcement methods that follow LIMA guidelines (least intrusive, minimally aversive). I currently work full time as an animal trainer at the San Diego Humane Society helping dogs and cats who need a bit more TLC on their journey toward adoption, so my availability is limited to post-normal business hours. I specialize in: Reactivity Fearful/shy behaviors Handling sensitivities Impulsivity (jumping, mouthing) House training Leash behaviors Basic obedience Destructive behaviors My goal is to help you understand your pets behaviors, develop a long term plan to manage, prevent undesired behaviors while building new ones you’d like to see in their place. I’ll be assessing your dog and their needs, but ultimately my goal is to give you the tools you need to set yourself and your dog up for success in a way that improves your bond and their confidence in you.

Emily is still training our Maltipoo Bella on a weekly basis. Her professionalism, kindness and "special" way she corrects our errors in are OUTSTANDING. She prompt, friendly and such a nice person. Her level of expertise is the best I have ever experienced with dog trainers. She genuinely shows much love for our 7-month old Bella. Our puppy has learned SO much in just 2 visits. She is also very reasonable. If you need a dog trainer for any problem or just for fun--HIRE Emily. You can text me at 848-333-7256 if you have any questions on this trainer.

I took three puppy-training courses with Emily, and it was a wonderful experience! She is very knowledgeable about training, and helped me through all other aspects of puppy parenthood. Every class presented a new challenge for my dog, progressing with a speed that suited both of us. She was also extremely flexible with my abnormal schedule. Her passion for what she does and love of animals is apparent, and makes every class enjoyable for my dog and I. I would take her courses again in a heartbeat, and would recommend her to anyone searching for a great teacher!

Emily made each class fun and worthwhile. She made all the objectives very clear and our pup never got frustrated with her methods. I would absolutely recommend Emily as an instructor.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I've worked in Rescue for eight years now, and am no stranger to acting as a foster mom. If you look at the dogs that wind up at a shelter closely you'll realize that a lot of them have one thing in common; They lack basic manners and obedience. My hope is that by tackling the problem at it's source I can help to save at least a few animals from winding up back at the shelter.

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

Anxiety, over excitement, fear aggression, leash aggression, socialization, potty training.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

FInd a trainer whose training style matches your needs and goals. Consider behavior modification methods: A fearful dog will only become more fearful in the face of positive punishment methods. Likewise, positive punishment can serve to exacerbate aggression issues. Consider teaching styles: If you have performance anxiety, speak to your trainer on the phone or set up a consultation to see how you feel with them. Look for someone who offers a lot of positive feedback. If you like clear direction choose someone with a good degree of confidence.
