Introduction: Clients tell me that their writing is better because they worked with me. Period. That is the only objective I have, and the only promise I make. I've always loved writing. What I like most about helping others find their voice is when I can transfer my knowledge of what makes writing work to someone else; I love that moment of "a-ha!" that comes across a fledgling writer's face -- sometimes, even, the face of someone who told me they could never write on their own.

Eric has reviewed multiple short stories of mine. His critiques all encompassed a range of feedback, from line edits suggesting word choice and word placement to the "big picture"--thematic intention and the overall impact of my work. He was thorough and knowledgeable and (yikes) honest. But most importantly, he gave practical suggestions to take my work to the next level.

I have had the privilege of hearing Eric Wyatt's wisdom about writing for many months now, particularly in our online discussions about writing. His insight about writing and writing practice is always sound, practical, and inspiring. Even though I've been writing for many years, I find myself taking his advice quite often. In particular, his knowledge of writing tools and strategies gives me new ways to broaden and deepen my work. I highly recommend Words Matter Creative Writing Instruction.

Words Matter helped me edit chapter one of my novel and it reads extremely well. Eric was very helpful and I will be going back with chapter two.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Writing is often seen as a solitary endeavor. We often have this idea of the writer, isolated, scribbling away or banging on the keyboard. I've found, though, that it is important to maintain relationships with other writers and creatives in various fields. I meet with a local writer's group, I correspond regularly with writer's from my MFA program, and I participate in online writer's chats and forums on a regular basis. It is a great thing when writers can encourage and inspire each other.

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

Fiction writing instruction, personal history (legacy writing) and family history writing, critique and editing services, writer-in-residence, non-fiction writing, ghostwriting, guided self publishing, seminars, workshops, public speaking.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

There are two things that will help us understand each other: First, take a look at the services I offer. The various pages here address specific areas, but this isn't an exhaustive list of ways I've helped others find their words. As you begin to understand my skills and areas of knowledge, you may find yourself thinking, "Maybe I could use some help, but I'm really not sure..." That's were the SECOND point comes in. The second thing you should do is contact me. We can talk. Talking is free, and it helps us get to know each other. I'll ask you some questions, listen to your answers, and then we can decide what's next.
