Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. I work in a salon where I am a full service hair artist: color/cuts/styling. I also freelance for weddings, special events & photo shoots.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Good work ain't cheap and cheap work ain't good!! Make sure you are hiring a licensed professional.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. This is a big secret! The color the client picks out of a color palette is not usually the color we end up mixing. We are chemists and have to factor in things like "underlying pigment" and desired results. We add a little bit of this and a little bit of that to create the perfect color for your locks. This is why we don't recommend box color! If you put a "box brown" on someone with blonde hair, it could turn "muddy" or "green." As hairstylists we are trained to mix the appropriate formula for the most desiresble results! If you want your hair to look it's best, go to your trusted hairstylist!

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. It's important to know how many people will be having their hair & makeup done that day and what type of styles and hair types they have. I charge by the hour to save brides money, so knowing those details helps me create an appropriate timeline to achieve the most progress in the least amount of time!

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I believe in continuing education. Only 10% of cosmetologists spend time and money perfecting their craft on advanced training with industry leaders. I do so on a yearly basis. I travel to NYC to top industry facilities like Redken Exchange and Matrix Global Academy every year to make sure I am current with education and trends. Knowledge is Power!

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I am an artist. I get to go to work every day and paint and cut hair! It's like arts and crafts all day long! It's never boring!

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. How long have you been doing hair? I've had my license since 2006 but have been doing hair for about 10 years.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. You can not expect to look like the model in the picture you bring us. Everyone has different hair texture and their unique natural color. We are beauticians not magicians! Although clients say I can work magic, not every hairstylist is as talented and knowledgeable as the next. Seek out the best, one with a great personality and great talent.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. I always colored my friends hair growing up. After I graduated from college my friends and family encouraged me to get my cosmetology license and it was the best thing I could have done.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. I was working on a Photo shoot for NV Lifestyle Magazine. It was a high fashion shoot with Spyker sportscars and Ducati Motorbikes. The hair came out amazing and I was so proud of my God given talents.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. As I mentioned before, I am always educating myself in my field. In this business you can never know too much.

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. I recently styled hair for MODE Lifestyle TV Launch Party in Miami. I worked for 6 hours on the models for the fashion show.

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. If you want to become a cosmetologist you must have patience and drive. You will not get rich as a new hairstylist and you aren't going to be a celebrity stylist anytime soon. It takes a lot of time, advanced education, TFP, etc. You must be willing to work extremely hard building clients and networking, while remembering it takes YEARS before you will have what you desire, unless you meet the right person. Never turn down a good opportunity just because you don't get paid much, or anything at all.
