Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. There is a difference between designers and developers. Design is about what the site looks like. Development is about what the site can do. Many people get frustrated when they ask their designer to create a shopping cart. But that's like asking a makeup artist to help you with your calculus homework. A dynamic website is created with server side scripting and a MySQL database. That's something we know all about.
Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
A. Be careful with the CMS (content management system) set ups like Word Press or Drupal. A lot of designers use them as a shortcut to get the site thrown together and then try to use plugins to do the job of the developer. When you want it to do something a little more custom, a designer is at a loss to go into the code and configure it differently. You may grow out of the confines of the cms template. Also be careful of the security leaks in the back end of Wordpress. Very easy for hacker scripts to plant malicious code. Google can smell this stuff and shut your site down. Be sure your designer is aware of that and keeping your version up to date.
Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?
A. Are you a designer or a developer? One does pretty, the other does smart. Two different sides of the brain. How much will I pay up front and how much for monthly support? If you are getting a site for next to nothing, it's a cookie cutter operation that has a system that was written long ago by offshore developers who do not work there. Any adjustments or customizations will be hard to get.
Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?
A. I often get asked 'How much is Paypal?' My first reaction is 'You mean to buy the whole company, or just controlling stock?' Make it easier on the person doing a quote. Do you have 1 product or 100 or 1000? Is it a digital download for one product or do you need individual shipping calculations for dozens? Will you be changing the information (putting things on sale, swapping out photos) or will the listing stay pretty much the same? Do you have product attributes to take into account? The typical ones are color and size, how about weight, length, height, expiration date, vendor. Did you want pictures of the products in each color or style? Do you want to sell gift certificates that can be redeemed online? Will you want coupons or discount codes to apply to all products or some products? Get the working model of your online store clear in your head before you ask someone for a quote for 'a shopping cart'.
