Introduction: Over 38 years, I have developed a unique, organic teaching method that allows for rapid, individualized progress for guitar players--beginners to advanced, performers, songwriters, and everything in between. Many of my techniques have been adapted from other disciplines, such as martial arts, dance, etc. ("body mechanics"). There are many other components to my approach. Guitar playing is a lifelong pursuit, and, if taught properly, a lifelong joyous experience! I enjoy many things about teaching. Often, the teacher learns from observing the student, allowing me to improve in addressing specific learning problems. The human aspect is wonderful--most of my students and their families end up being friends. I particularly enjoy watching a student gain confidence and pleasure from knowing they are beginning to "hit the marks" and be able to control their instrument; to be able to determine their musical destiny, play along with others, play for their friends and family, etc.

Really, words cannot even describe how pleased I am with Rich Engle's ability to teach guitar. My 13 year old son has had several guitar teachers in the area and honestly, Rich has been the first to tap into his talent. Rich's calm but yet vivacious personality combined with his remarkable talent, makes him clearly, the best instructor I've ever encountered. My son so much enjoys going to his home to learn and successfully play. Since we've been with Rich, my son's progression in playing has steadily increased. He is now excited for the lessons as well as with practicing. I have found Rich to be mentor - someone whom my son looks up to - from both a talented and a personal perspective. In closing, I just feel so fortunate to have found Rich Engel for my son's lessons - he makes all the difference in the world!

My wife was looking for guitar lessons for our son. After talking to numerous people and lessons never materializing, she almost gave up until one day she saw Rich Engle's ad. She called set up a lesson. Wow my son had a lesson a few days after calling Rich. The reports about the lessons from both were great. Over time my son's lesson was changed to Saturday so I got a chance to observe. After the lessons Rich and I would talk music. Well it was not long before I was taking lessons. I'm having a blast learning the guitar! As advertised he will teach You what You want to learn, even help find the right guitar for you. If you ever wanted to learn to play the guitar or want your son or daughter to learn, I would recommend Rich... he knows his stuff!

After many, many years, I finally decided to pursue my interest in learning how to play the guitar. Even though I realized there was a lot of information online, I knew that I would need professional lessons, someone to sit down with me and provide personalized, well thought out lesson plans. Frankly, I did not think I would ever learn to play well, but at least I had to give it my best efforts to satisfy my "obsession", and having trained in certain sports over the years, I recognized that my best chance at any success at guitar was with a teacher. Richard Engle was referred to me, and we hit it off right from the start. Not only is he an amazing player in his own right, but his enthusiasm in teaching as well as his patience and intelligence, has enabled me to progress much, much further than I was anticipating. If you want to learn how to play, or improve your current skills, do yourself a favor and contact Richard. Good luck and have fun!

He's the best music teacher I have ever had! He absolutely knows how to teach anyone. God has given him an amazing gift of teaching and I am thankful to Him for that. Mr. Rich has taught me more in a year than I learned in three years else where. He's nice, respectful, understanding, and professional. I couldn't ask for a better teacher. My favorite part about my first few classes was that even though I wasn't very good he didn't hold it against me or make me feel less superior.... He judged my ability but he didn't condemn me for it....if that makes sense. If you need a guitar teacher I would 100% recommend Mr. Rich. AND he's reasonably priced! If you want to REALLY learn....Call Him!

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

My continuing education consists mainly of exposing myself, constantly, to all types of music and music technologies. Additionally, I play weekly at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ft. Myers, which requires me to handle an extremely eclectic blend of music. Ongoing education is 24/7 in my world! I spend a lot of time analyzing charts, learning more about optimizing guitars, many other things. I also am planning to record another album this year--this time a solo project, which will involve coast-to-coast recording over the Internet. This will be technically interesting, exciting, challenging! I also am moving out into other instruments and styles. Generally, I stay very much abreast of things out of habit--all those years in the industry; the sales end of it.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

It was kind of decided FOR me. I developed a proficiency very quickly on the guitar. I was taking lessons, and one of our teachers quit, there at the little studio I was taking at. The owner had me take on the beginners. Not so much because I was extremely competent (I was, at least for beginners) but because he knew I could deal with people properly. It was very odd because I was taking lessons and working furiously to stay about one book ahead of some of the beginners! I had to work very very hard. I immersed myself in it. And I found out I really enjoyed watching people get better. It never felt like work and it never will.
