DO NOT TRUST THEM!!!!!! I called to find out about the boarded boot camp program and was happy with what I heard. They picked up my dog and took it to their facility to begin training. The woman, co-owner of the academy, made an off the cuff comment, which did not sit well, about how they prefer to pick up the dogs so the owners do not see their facilities. Despite feeling uneasy with that comment, I trusted them with my pet. A few weeks later, I had to pull the dog out due to unforeseen circumstances. Rather than picking it up from their facility, I was directed to an abandoned parking lot and that is where my dog was handed to me. When we got home, I realized that it was covered in fleas and flea bites/sores. I am very concerned about the type of conditions the dogs are under while at this place.
Scheurman's K9 Academy's reply
Dog was picked up on March 21, 2014. As the owner was returning from a walk. We noted animals at large running and walking around and through the clients property. The owner sited loss of income, as a reason to terminate the contract with us. The dog Lela was returned on 4/5/2014 at 9 AM. The dog was returned in a fenced and secure parking lot, that we use to teach obedience classes, NOT an ABANDON parking lot. This is from the boarding contract the was signed by the owner. Your dog has a TARGETED RETURN DATE, of days. We will make every effort to meet our deadline. However each dog is an individual. We will NOT push a dog beyond it's ability to learn. In some cases, it will take longer, for the dog to learn. In which case, the dog will be returned as soon as it meets our standards. Should the OWNER DEMAND the return of the dog, prior to our satisfaction. The full amount of training MUST be paid by cash. Further it releases Scheurman's K9 Academy from ANY Guarantee's whether verbal, or written. The OWNER also waives all claims for any portion of the private lessons, remaining on the contract. Owner's Signature: _________________________________________ Since the owner sited loss of employment as a reason for termination of the contract, we waived the balance due on the contract $900.00, which she is contractually obligated to pay. We tried to set an appointment to return Lela, on Thursday April 3, 2014, during hours we were teaching classes, but they couldn't make it. While Scheurman's K9 Academy will make every reasonable effort to safe guard my pets health, I understand that pets become ill, can contract parasitic organisms, and sometimes injure themselves by no fault of Scheurman's K9 Academy. I will not hold Scheurman's K9 Academy responsible for any such incidences that occur. Further I agree to pay all veterinary costs of treatment prior to signing this agreement, Veterinary cost during training, and any and all veterinary cost post training. That Scheurman's K9 Academy is not responsible for any damages for an act of nature, or God. Including natural disaster, manmade disaster, or elements beyond Scheurman's K9 Academy’s direct control. ______________________ Further I state that my dog is under the care of a licensed veterinarian Name: __________________________________________________________ Address: ________________________________________________________ City: ________________________ State : ______________ Zip code: ____________ Phone number: _____________________________________________ My dog is on Monthly Preventive medication to control Heartworms, round worms, hook worms, whip worms, fleas and ticks. _____________________________________________ I understand that should my dog develop any of the above listed conditions, the recourse lies with my veterinarian, and the product manufacturers. _____________________________________________ I further understand that boarding a dog can cause stress related skin conditions. Such as Hot Spots, moist and dry demodex, as well as other skin abnormalities. __________________________ It has been further explained that Scheurman’s K9 Academy, Wallace Scheurman and Edith Scheurman are NOT licensed veterinarians, that they cannot diagnose or treat conditions my dog has without veterinarian consent. _____________________________________________ I wish to have my dog examined by my veterinarian every week of his stay. You will be charged $25.00 transportation fee for each visit; PLUS you will have to make arraignments with your veterinarian to pay their cost (office visit, medication, or procedures). __________________________________________ I DO NOT wish to have my dog examined by my veterinarian every week of his stay. I understand that certain conditions require veterinarian diagnoses, and or laboratory examination which Scheurman’s K9 Academy only has access to, through a licensed veterinarian. _________________________________ The above clearly states that the dog was required to be on Monthly Preventive medication to control Heartworms, round worms, hook worms, whip worms, fleas and ticks. Apparently the owners falsified the contract, and the dog was not on this medication. Since the owner was out walking the dog in the neighborhood just prior to us picking up the dog, the nature of the fleas is unknown. We have never had a problem with fleas, and our students who frequently board their dogs, have never reported a flea problem. Dogs that are on flea medication, don't get infested in two weeks! Lastly "if" this owner had any qualms about sending her dog with us, she could have signed the contract which would have had her dog checked by her veterinarian each week of its stay. Rather than the I do not want my dog checked by my veterinarian which she selected. The fact that we do not allow visitors, the main reason is the security of the dogs. The second is we do not want unannounced visitors (owners), interfering with our training schedule. We are hired to train their dogs, and not entertain the owners. Third we establish a training bond with the dog, which is fragile, because it is based on respect and understanding , which is easily severed, to allow the dog to reestablish the bond with the owners quickly. If needed I can scan the complete contract, and post it on this site.

I first met Wally and Edith in April of 2013 when I began attending basic obedience class with my Weimaraner puppy (Oliver). I have been attending class between one and two times a week since then. Oliver has been boarded with Wally and Edith on three occasions. The first time was in the summer of 2013 for approximately 50 days while I was studying law in France. The second and third times were after that for about 5 days each time. Wally and Edith are the only people I will trust Oliver with, aside from his vet. Wally and Edith have many students and EVERY student that I have met over the last year, has the upmost respect and admiration for them. Additionally, Oliver has made monumental strides in terms of obedience. As a result, Wally and Edith have helped me develop and strengthen my relationship with him. I encourage you to visit their website and visit one of their classes if you have any questions as to the quality of training that Wally and Edith provide.

A trainer that can help you train your dog. The big difference is simple, do you want to see the trainer videotaping himself or herself with his trained dog, or a trainer videotaping a group of students training their dogs, each at a different level (which happens in our intermediate group programs) showing what you can expect from your training at Scheurman's K9 Academy. I knew a trainer that bought a trained dog and passed it off as a dog he trained. At Scheurman's K9 Academy we train our personal dogs right next to our students, in our own group classes, so our students can see and attest to the facts of the dogs training.
