I am a self-taught guitarist. I learned music theory on my own as well, and I feel it does help, but it is not absolutely necessary to learn to play; that really depends on the level of musician you want or intend to be.

I have played guitar for about 6 years now and play currently in the Orlando-based band Silver Cord. If you're looking to just learn to strum some chords, learn covers, be a rhythm or lead guitarist, or write your own music, I can help you attain that goal.

If you put the hard work early on in your playing, it will pay off tremendously in the end.

Ray is a great guitarist and really knows his stuff. What really sets him apart from other teachers is his demeanor and willingness to teach. He's there with you every step of the way! Great musician. Great person. Highly recommended.

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Acoustic guitar instruction as well as electric guitar instruction. My ability to play lead guitar has the most impact on my clients. I have spent the most time giving other guitarists lessons on how to improve their lead guitar skills.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. I am much more hands on, I will not teach by having you learn covers to learn other peoples licks, unless that is your preference. I have a unique style because I taught myself on the basis of the style of music I love, not just the musicians that I like.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Learning to play guitar takes time. If you have the discipline to put in the work, you'll be a great guitar player in less time than you realize.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Ask them what kind of gear they own; guitars, amps, etc. Ask how many years they have played, as well as how many hours of practice they put into their craft in those years. Practical knowledge of music theory is helpful, but not necessary, though you do not want a "noodler" teaching you guitar. You definitely want someone that has experience teaching, and has patience for beginners.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. The most important information that buyers should have thought through before seeking out instruction is the type of music they intend on playing as well as serious they intend to be. If you want to be an original song writer you will have to put more effort into learning your craft. If you intend on being a cover song artist, then simply learning timing and how to read tabs will suffice. If you want to do nothing more than be a cover artist or if you do plan to be a song writer or anything in between, I can most certainly help you to achieve those goals.
