Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. I tutor k-12. Most commonly elementary school.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Teaching is a team effort. Tutors therefore need to work with parents and classroom teachers in order to achieve the best results for the student.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. I wish that everyone knew what school is like from the teacher's perspective. The only "inside secret" I would share is that good teachers are perceptive, caring, kind and not easily intimidated by red tape and bureaucracy.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I have 5 years of consecutive teaching experience.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. The kids. I love seeing the proverbial light bulb being turned on in my student's head when they understand what is being taught.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Most commonly I receive questions about the FCAT like "when is the test?"

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. I have many. One that I tell often is the story of the business projects that I had my students carry out. They had to invent a business, purchase or create the products, market and then sell their product for a profit. I was so proud of the them- in one week they sold over $1500 worth of products. They learned how to use their resources wisely including managing their time, how to write a business plan and how to successfully market themselves.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. Teachers often are misrepresented or unrecognized by the media and the community. There are some whack jobs out there but that is to be expected in any profession. By and large however, teachers are kind, caring people with their student's best interests at heart.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. My most recent tutoring client was a 6-year old boy struggling with some of the 1st grade concepts; I tutored him for 10 weeks. He had recently experienced some major changes in his life when his parents' separated and this caused him to start falling behind. I saw him just a few days ago and he was so proud to tell me that he was promoted to 2nd grade and that he was doing much better with his math and feeling more confident about school.
