Hired on Thumbtack

I was impressed by the fact that Debbie and Ian came out to my house to quote the job, other contractors through thumbtack gave bids over the phone. A contractors bid prior to thumbtack overestimated the square footage which skewed the total cost of the other bids received via phone. Anyway, Ian's square footage estimate was spot on but the actual installation was a disappointment initially. However, I am happy to say that Ian went above and beyond - he and several of his crew removed the botched job and reinstalled over the weekend so we were not overly inconvenienced. I really like their attention to customer service but they need to make sure that they always have at least one member on the installation team who is an installation expert- it would help them to have satisfied clients the first time around and more importantly referrals and repeat business.

I supplied materials, so any complaints I may have with the materials doesn't reflect on them. That being said! I requested a quote and stated the condition of the project up front. I was quoted $1.10 per foot over the phone. When the owner of the company, Ian, showed up, he quoted me $1.50 per foot. You saw it, it's a different job, that's fine. However, his final price was based off the waste square footage, not the footage of the unit! In the end, there is a difference of 289 square feet between the unit, and the waste square footage. That comes out to $400.50 that I was overcharged, or an effective price of $1.93 per foot! While they got me out of a tight bind, and did excellent work, if I use them for my next project (professional rehabber), I would have to sit on them so I don't get taken a second time.
Tricolor Flooring's reply
We appreciate your review Benjamin and in saying that, we gave you an over the phone guesstimate based upon the information you provided to us so that we could get your job done ASAP (next day) as per your request. We never usually do that process because of situations like this, what you see for your floor can be interpreted in our vision as our specialty industry is flooring. In future, I'd prefer give you an onsite estimate to make sure both parties are on the same page. Thanks again for your business, we really do appreciate it.

FAQs

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

A lot of Florida residents call me with issues with their solid hard wood floors buckling or becoming warped over the years. This problem is quite common actually and increasing over the months. Engineered hard wood flooring is highly recommended if you live in Florida due to the high amount of humidity the state receives.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

The advice I have for customers is to make sure you do your homework with any companies you hire for any of your home projects. Licensed, insured and reputable references is always the best checklist to obtain.
