I'm Jim Skinner, the founder and CEO of Backyard Citrus Care. I was born in Sarasota and raised in south Manatee County. My family had Midway Groves, a citrus business started by my grandfather in the 1920's, that grew to three stores and a shipping business that shipped fruit all over the world.
I grew up in the business, working the groves as a boy, then a teenager, graduated from the University of Florida in 1975, and ran the groves for 20 years. I was on the Citrus Advisory Committee, which advises the U of F on areas or research, for several years.
In 1995, I started Backyard Citrus Care -- just me and my goldendoodle Dexter, which I eventually built to service currently nearly 1,300 clients in three counties -- we go from Parrish to Punta Gorda. We visit each client four times per year, spraying and fertilizing their trees and checking for disease. We also prune and plant trees, do some landscaping, and we do pressure washing and low pressure roof cleaning.
