Commercial Band & Music Photographer

Russ Robinson is a commercial band photographer in Tampa, FL, specializing in promotional imagery for musicians and bands, including CD/album covers, press kits, promos, and various other forms of music photography.

His style is usually described as being crisp, vibrant, hi-def, and sharp as a tack, and his clients frequently remark that his imagery has helped them tremendously in terms of getting noticed in the ever-crowded music industry.

Russ has also carved out quite a name for himself through the creation of stunning digital composites, where he shoots an artist in one location (usually his studio) and then artificially places them into a completely different scene in Photoshop. This opens up a number of distinct creative possibilities that just wouldn't be feasible otherwise.

Most importantly, Russ is best known for his unwavering willingness to literally bend over backwards for his clients, and the fact that they continue to return to him for their promotional photos year after year is a true testament to this.

Question and answer

  • Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

    A. Choosing the best music photographer in your area doesn't have to be a long and painful process. In fact, I've written an easy-to-follow 5-step checklist that will get you paired up with the perfect photographer in no time at all:

  • Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

    A. Don't be fooled into thinking that just because someone is "good at photography" that they'll be able to deliver targeted, attention-grabbing, and highly effective promo images that will get you noticed in an increasingly crowded music industry. All too often I see photographers in various genres (wedding, portrait, family, etc.) who also occasionally shoot bands & musicians on the side, but who clearly don't understand the unique needs of these clients. For instance, there are some crucial stylistic differences between things like cd covers and press kit photos about which most photographers are clueless, so their ability to deliver suitably customized images is virtually nil. As a musician, you usually get (at most) one shot to make a great first impression, so finding a photographer who can give you high-quality promotional images that embody an accurate representation of your unique musical style and voice is paramount. Remember-- people will hear your music with their EYES first.

  • Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

    A. 1) What types of photography do you specialize in, and how does commercial music photography fit into this equation?

    2) Do you have any experience as a working musician? If not, how do I know that you'll be able to understand my particular needs?

    3) What are your rates for photography services? Will I be required to pay any royalties for commercial use of the resulting images?

    4) Do you typically shoot in a studio or on location? Can you describe what a typical shoot entails, from start to finish?

    5) Approximately how long will it take to edit the images and deliver the final versions to me?

  • Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

    A. It's important to have a thorough understanding of your particular promotional needs before seeking out a photographer. For instance, are you looking for a new website header? Updated press kit photos? Something you can put on t-shirts and hats to sell at your upcoming show? All of the above? Each of these situations requires custom-designed images that conform to a different set of stylistic conventions, so you shouldn't expect to use the same shot for every situation. Knowing what you plan to do with the images ahead of time will pay huge dividends when it comes to planning your photo shoot.

  • Q. What do you like most about your job?

    A. It's a perfect marriage of my two greatest artistic passions in life-- music and photography. Nothing motivates me more than putting absolutely stellar promotional images into my clients' hands and having them tell me how utterly blown away they are. It definitely keeps the wind in my sails.
