Question and answer
Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.
A. Though I have tutored most grades and college students, my most common types of jobs are tutoring 6th-9th grade students. In many schools these days, students don't receive a math book that they can take home. If there is one available, they usually have to go through some sort of process just to borrow it. With all the difficulty around having a book to study from, this leaves many students with a disadvantage in their math class. Add that to the fact that some don't absorb math as quickly as others and you have a student that feels helpless, who begins to believe that they'll never get math.
Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
A. How do you help a student to learn math when they have had so much difficulty in school? Answer: Often times, teachers don't or can't spend much time on material. Because of this, the remedy for many students is a tutor that is patient and optimistic. When you are willing to repeatedly review material, create analogies/draw pictures and encourage the client, it is only a matter of time before they begin to grasp the information.
Q. What do you like most about your job?
A. Flexibility and seeing children excel in areas where they used to struggle.
Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A. *Are you willing to come to my home? Sure, and at no extra charge.
*What other subjects do you tutor? Only math, from basic to algebra.
*How often do you think my child needs to meet with you? It varies per child. I would have to take time to do a free one hour assessment to see where they are in math thus far.
Q. Write your own question and answer it.
A. If I am a parent with a struggling child, what advice would you give me? Answer: Patience is one of the biggest things when it comes to dealing with a child that doesn't easily understand math. No matter how much you feel that they are at the level where they should understand the material by now, referring to them negatively will only make things worst. You will then go from having a student that doesn't understand to having a student that not only doesn't understand, but that feels that they never will.
