Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. When looking for private music lessons and instruction, always make sure that the teacher that you select has both performance experience as well as a solid educational foundation. Teachers that only have performance experience may teach improper techniques that work for them but can be harmful to one's technique. Teachers that only have an educational background may know theories and techniques, but lack the real-world application of the techniques. A well-balanced teacher can help you with both sides. They will be able to help you develop your technique, health, and can assist with performance and business advice. Be sure to read your teacher's bio and ask any questions about their education and experience.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. There are many things that are both difficult and frustrating about the music business. First, you must do a truthful self evaluation of your musical abilities. This can be one of the hardest things to do. Next, you must identify a good teacher or coach to help you with your weaknesses. This must be someone that will be honest and upfront with you, as well as someone with both experience in the business and a strong educational background. It is very important that you understand that this coach or teacher may be very critical and their feedback may not always be positive but should always be constructive. Make sure to listen to all of the criticism and advice that your teacher gives you and apply it. Finally ask questions. The only dumb question is the one that you do not ask. Make sure that you fully understand everything that you need to work on and improve and how to do it. This will ensure that you are successful in your musical endeavors. And remember, no one is too old or too advanced to have a coach or teacher. Many professional musicians who have been performing still work with a teacher or coach to help them with their weaknesses. A second perspective or set of ears is always valuable at any level.
