Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Look at the provider's previous videos carefully. Then ask exactly how much work they did - did they come up with the ideas, did they direct the shoot, did they write the script, edit the work, and create the graphics? Make sure to ask for references from prior clients. Ask the prior clients if they would use the provider again. Ask if the video producer was responsive to changes and their needs. Make sure to talk with the video producer about how long it will take to make a quality video that meets your budget requirements.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Quality work takes time. Efficient project management and superior customer service can save clients money. If I were a customer, I would want to use a production/post-production company that both valued me and had a streamlined workflow. If companies return calls and emails promptly and talk honestly about budget concerns, rather than saying "sure," and then asking for more money, then you can be confident that this company is reputable. If the video production company helps to educate you about the process, then you've found a gem.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. How long have you been in business?
Where can I see examples of your work?
Describe how you met your client's needs in your most recent project.
Have you won any recent awards? What were they for?
Describe the process of making and editing a video to me.
What type of videos is your company known for?
How often do you meet your client's deadlines?
Do you ever have cost overruns? How do you handle them?
What do you do if a client is unhappy with your work?
Do you have any guarantees in place?

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. Buyers should be clear about the message they want to send with their video. They should know the audience with whom they are communicating. They do not need to have thought out "creative approaches," although it is helpful if they have an understanding of the primary emotion they want to communicate.
