Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. The best advice I can give is that customers should view a demo reel of the video production company they are interested in hiring and then compare the reel to the type of video they want to create. For example, if you're looking to do a cooking show, you probably don't want to hire someone that does a lot of weddings.
Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?
A. First and foremost, you should ask a prospective service professional if they specialize in what you're asking them to do. Even if your project is very unique, it's still likely to fall in a broader category and it's important that your video production company has experience in what you're desiring to accomplish with your video project.
Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?
A. Buyers should be aware that there are multiple stages to video production. Namely:
1. Planning or Pre-production
2. Production (Shooting)
3. Post Production (Editing and Final Delivery)
Most of the attention is always on production, but pre-production and post-production are stages that will also take time and will therefore factor in to any estimate that you receive from video production companies.
Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?
A. I actually started doing video production as part of my comedy background. I had some comedian friends that wanted to film comedy sketches and I decided to buy the camera equipment back in 2006. As I got better with it, people started asking me to do their projects and I started Smart Aleck Films in January 2009.
Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?
A. Get out there and shoot. It's that simple. Reading books and going to school is great, but this is not a profession that you'll master by simply knowing techniques. Watch movies and television shows. If you read a book, be sure to apply what you've learned and then see if you like it. See if you can duplicate a scene or a camera move from one of your favorite programs.
