DeafTax.com is an online tax preparation service provider website that was started by Joshua R. Beal for the U.S. Deaf community to provide accessible communication options.

Accessible communication means our services are fully available through numerous communication outlets depending on your needs. We can communicate with you via email, instant messenger, text message, Skype, videophone, telephone, or Fax.

Our tax preparers are deaf; some can speak fluent English, while others only communicate with sign language. We all use the Internet to serve our clients, so if you have access to email and a scanner, you can easily send your tax documents to our offices.

The firm has been located in the Washington DC Metro area since 1971. Now we are located in Bethesda, MD, and currently operating a second office headed by Mr. Beal, in Honolulu, HI.

Our staff has over 50 years of tax preparation and three of our staff have MBA's. We handle all types of returns for individuals, businesses, non-profits, and trusts.

Our fees are based on the time spent preparing your return with the average tax return at 1 hour or less. Our firm is in business all year round with full-time staff, so we are always available to service your inquiries and any issues with the IRS or other related tax issues.

Question and answer

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Since we are one of the only firms in the nation employing deaf people to prepare tax returns for mainstream tax consumers, the standard is much higher since we have to prove ourselves. Fortunately, we have a good reputation, earned over the past 40 years, that enables us to continue our business.
We've expanded to serve everyone by focusing on their communication needs. There are many people with hearing loss that are unable to use the relay service, so they are limited to email or text messaging. Also, there are a lot of professionals that simply don't have the time to come into the office, so email and fax are other alternatives that our clients use.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. We really enjoy the aspect of empowering our clients with information that enables them to make better choices in respect to their finances. So many people are not fully informed about their options, so we strive to accomplish this by asking questions and providing the client with the opportunity to seek out answers to their financial issues.
Communication access is a great benefit for our firm since we are all deaf, so we've enabled the business communications to be accessible regardless of who is calling - a deaf person or a non-disabled person.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Most clients ask about the price of our service, which is a 1 time fee based on the time spent preparing your return. In addition, it includes a full year of service relating to that return, so if you are asking for another copy of your return or advice on how to reduce taxes for next year, we provide this service as part of the tax preparation fee.

We keep all files on our secured hard drives, so if you lose a copy of your tax documents, you can retrieve copies from us in addition to the tax forms whether it's 1040, 990 or other forms.
