Mark Mirsky and the team at ROI Business Services have helped turn my business finances around. After a negative experience with a previous accountant, Mark was able to show me what had been done wrong, and help me understand the changes that needed to be made in order to right the wrongs. He takes the time to educate his clients, which I really value. His knowledge regarding business tax and accounting is far more than I will ever comprehend, and I will continue working with him for both my business and personal taxes and accounting.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Sometimes, you get what you pay for. Businesses starting out sometimes don't invest in themselves properly. If they won't invest, why would a bank, prospective customer, or even investor? It is never too late to review where you are stand as a business. And individuals should review their tax status throughout the year as changes occur.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. It would be nice to understand what is required to do from both an accounting and tax perspective. In addition, we would want to know what we should be doing as a business owner on a recurring basis. Not everyone has an MBA or MST and understands what is required in business. We would appreciate an education so that we could manage our own business effectively and efficiently.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. What are your credentials? How many years have you been practicing? What experience do you have working with the different types of entities? How diverse is your client base? Are they all one or two types of entity? Do you teach either clients or other professionals in your industry? Do you truly understand partnership taxation? Do you have experience with the different types of taxation throughout the states or just Illinois? Can you handle international issues should they arise? What is your experience working with government authorities?

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. Are they price shopping or looking for a value for their money? Do they want advice throughout the year or do they simply want a compliance function taken care of annually? Do they want proactive or reactive advice? Have they had a checkup for their business and personal taxes already prepared for the current tax year?
