Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Filing for bankruptcy is a major life event. Get educated about what's involved before you schedule an initial consultation so that you can ask informed questions.

One excellent resource is your local public library. Author Steven Elias has written excellent books covering bankruptcy filing that I recommend you read (published by Nolo Press).

Another free educational resource is my own website, www.alvinforeman.com. Check out the FAQs and the blog posts for insights into the bankruptcy process.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Be careful of hiring high volume law firms with the most television commercials and the biggest Yellow Pages ads. Run a Google search for the term "bankruptcy mill" to get a sense of why the biggest law firm is not necessarily the best. Personalized service is key.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. When you meet with a potential bankruptcy attorney, ask: "Who exactly will be handling my case from start to finish?"

Some high volume law firms will have you meet with an attorney, but then assign your case to a paralegal. And then, on that very important date when you must appear before the bankruptcy trustee who will examine you and review your filing, they will assign your case to yet another attorney, who has never met you and who has not reviewed at your file until that morning.

When you hire me to represent you in filing your bankruptcy case, I will personally handle your case from start to finish. Not a law clerk, not a paralegal and not a "court appearance attorney."
