Question and answer

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. We have a high attention to detail and go the extra mile with every aspect of the job to be performed. I often say, "You only have one chance to do concrete right." It is important not only to have the proper materials, tools, and knowledge, but to act as if each job was being done for royalty. That way, every customer is treated with the highest respect, and the finished project will mirror our commitment to quality. One goal is to produce concrete flatwork that will not have to be redone for 75-100 years. If we can achieve that, then everyone involved will reap the benefits.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. It is a pleasure to meet many different people and to work in various cities and places. Moving from one job to the next keeps us from becoming bored with the same old routine. Concrete itself offers many challenges that can be interesting to overcome, which can be enjoyable. We all have developed our own versions of "horror stories" as it relates to our type of work. But, oddly enough, one of the things I like to do the most, is dig. That's right--with a shovel--by hand. I know it seems weird, but someone has to do it.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Almost all customers ask, "Will the concrete crack?" The answer is always the same. "Yes." There are three things that are constants with concrete: It will get hard, it will crack, and no one will steal it once it is poured out. Our commitment to dealing with cracks, though, is very thorough. We maintain proper concrete thickness, we always use wire mesh or rebar, and we use saw cuts or grooves to tell the concrete where to crack. Wire mesh or rebar reinforces the concrete so that it cannot separate when it does crack. Many contractors have gone to fiber mesh, which in my opinion does absolutely nothing to prevent concrete from cracking and separating. Grooves or saw cuts are decorative ways that weaken the concrete on the top surface, that cause it to crack underneath, which won't be visible to the customer.
