Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Before hiring a design professional, have a clear understanding about the differences between Interior Designer and Interior Decorators.

Decorators AREN'T Designers! Unlike decorators, interior designers must have a formal training. Check his/her credentials, if the professional doesn't show a portfolio, ask for one.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Designers have different ways of charging clients. It mostly depends on the scope of the work and the location.

Some professionals work on an hourly basis while others offer a flat fee and others charge a percentage of their cost (commission).

Make sure you have a clear understanding about the professional's charging policy and ask for that policy to be included in the contract.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Whenever you are in need of an interior design professional, make sure that person has passed the National Council of Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam and he/she is registered with the State and do check his/hers credentials too.

Although both decorators and designers can create beautiful and functional spaces; interior designers are licensed professionals who coordinate projects that may involve architecture and construction. Decorators make aesthetic improvements, but they don’t make structural changes to interior spaces. In short, decorators don’t need to be knowledgeable about building and safety codes.
